Welcome to the New Bing

We understand that search is not just about finding information; it’s about taking action and doing. As part of our ongoing mission to make that a reality, we have updated the Bing design in a way that fundamentally changes how you interact with search. The new three-column design focuses on bringing information from the Web, experts and enthusiasts, and friends to help people do more.

What Your Friends May Know — Sidebar

Getting things done often includes friends, family, and the opinions of experts or enthusiasts. Whether it’s making a purchase, choosing a restaurant or deciding what movie to see, the new Bing design focuses on unique ways to bring friends and experts into your search experience from the most popular social networks, including Facebook, Twitter, Quora, Foursquare and LinkedIn. These social results, found in the right column, complement the standard search results without compromising them, offering you the chance to start a conversation and get help from your friends and the advice of experts and enthusiasts, right within the search experience.

·  Friends who might know. Bing will surface friends in the sidebar who have recently liked, shared or searched for content related to your query, helping you find more relevant information. For example, if you’re searching for great diving spots in Costa Rica, you might discover that someone in your Facebook network also just visited and has some great ideas, based on their recent searches or shared content.

·  People who know. Beyond friends, Bing also identifies and surfaces experts and enthusiasts with knowledge in areas related to your search. When you search for that amazing Costa Rican diving spot, Bing will surface people who you may not know personally, but are influential on that topic and can help you find that perfect spot.

·  Ask friends. Post a question to get help from your Facebook friends as you search. Bing suggests friends on Facebook who might know about the topic — based on what they like or have shared — so you can easily get relevant experiences and solicit opinions from people who know. Friends can see and reply to your question on Facebook or Bing and add in recommended search links with their response.

·  Activity feed. From the activity feed in the sidebar you can see, in real time, posts and queries you and your friends have shared from Bing. You can help answer friends’ questions, like an interesting post or get inspired to discover new things by seeing what your friends are searching for. Because these activities show up in both the Bing activity feed and Facebook, you can like and comment on them from either place.

What Bing Knows — Snapshot

The snapshot, the center column, makes it easier than ever to get things done. The snapshot is designed to help you take action and includes information such as maps and reviews, so booking a restaurant or checking hotel rates is now quicker and easier. Bing also brings partners such as OpenTable right into the snapshot to help you take action without leaving the page.

·  Restaurants. See summarized reviews from across the Web, location maps and one-click directions, interior panoramas, and building shots right within the snapshot without ever opening a new page. You’ll know where you’re going, what to wear, how to get there and more, right within the snapshot.

·  Hotels. Unsure what hotel you’d like to book for your trip to Hawaii? Bing shows a collection of hotels with easy access to pricing data with the check-in, check-out tool. For specific hotel searches, Bing offers photos, maps, easy access to pricing and the exclusive OpinionRank from Bing, which shows what people from across the Web think about the property.

·  Movies and events. When searching for a specific movie, the snapshot aggregates movie images, reviews, facts about the film and important links such as show times near your location. You can even view the movie trailer without leaving the page.

·  People. Searching for people is very common, but finding the right person can be difficult. Bing uses social networks to help narrow down your search to the correct person. The snapshot allows you to see information from many networks, including LinkedIn, Twitter and even photos shared across Facebook, to help you find the right person.

What the Web Knows

Because we know you are often just looking for a quick answer, algorithmic search remains at the core of the Bing search experience and is the first column on the left. You should think of column one as your fact finder. As part of the new Bing experience and design, we’ve removed clutter and improved features, such as sorting and filters, and we’re bringing in more relevant information on the first page to make it easier than ever to find exactly what you’re looking for and to get things done.
