Meet This Year’s Ray DeVries Memorial Scholarship Winners

Each year, Washington Farm Bureau offers up to five $2,000 scholarships as part of the Ray DeVries Memorial Scholarship program.

These scholarships are awarded to undergraduate students currently enrolled in agriculture or a related field at an accredited college or university. Applicants must have completed at least one year of secondary education. A person may receive the scholarship only once, and must be a member, or the son, daughter, or legal dependent of a Farm Bureau member family with a current membership.

He or she must also be attending an accredited college/university and enrolled in a field of agriculture or in a course as it relates to agriculture.

Travis Bates, son of John and Janet Bates of Grant County Farm Bureau, is a senior at Washington State University. During his junior year Bates served as the secretary for the WSU Cougar Cattle Feeders club. He is majoring in Animal Science with a Pre-Vet Option.

Kristin Boshart, daughter of Larry and Debbie Boshart of Snohomish County Farm Bureau, will be a senior at Washington State University where she is pursuing an agricultural education. During her junior year, Boshart was the President of historic women’s dorm, Stevens Hall. She has organized and helped with activities such as campus clean-ups, food and clothing drives and recycling programs. She has also been involved in 4-H and FFA.

Sage Shelton, son of Sky and Karri Shelton, is a senior at Washington State University, where he is majoring in Agriculture Technology & Management. Shelton purchased a combine he used for custom harvesting of wheat. He also purchased 15 cows with calves he pastured this summer. He has been relied upon to irrigate timothy hay fields, operate various types of equipment and help with planting sweet corn. Shelton was in a leadership role within the WSU Chapter of the WFB YF&R Committee and was recently elected President of the Chapter.

Meagan Hughes, daughter of Bob and Michelle Hughes of Skagit County Farm Bureau, is a senior at Washington State University, where she is majoring in Agriculture Technology & Management. Hughes is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, which requires a GPA of 3.5 and higher. She also received a service award through the National Honors Society when she was at Mount Vernon High School.

Erinn Danielle Argo, daughter of Daniel and Angela Argo of Grant County Farm Bureau, is a sophomore at University of Idaho, where she is majoring in AgriBusiness and

minoring in Spanish. Argo would like to work as a crop consultant upon graduation.
