A Reflection from Deacon Will:

The grace of God poured out upon each of us is not ours to keep or wield as a bludgeon upon the unsuspecting. If it’s of God it’s always life-giving. Life-giving could very well be not of this life here on earth but in union with the heavenly hosts at the banquet we are all striving to reach.

Don’t water it down, clearly the message of Mark’s Gospel. “Whoever is not against us is for us.” Friday with my trip to hospital this time as a patient rather than a visitor drove this message home. God’s hand was in the entire day. It started with a little nagging chest pain that wouldn’t go away. The ER Doctor did an EKG returned to the room with a strip of paper with glyphs that compared with the Dead Sea Scrolls. Her smile stated well before words that everything was going to be OK, “you did not have a heart attack.” Another Doctor appears and says we need to wait for the blood work before you can go home. Five minutes later she reappears and states your having a massive heart attack we’re moving you to ICU now. Lots of poking, jabbing, sticking, and testing, surgery and supper a quiet night and discharge. A bit watered down, each of those people realizing it or not were of God and NOT WATTERED DOWN.

Fr. Jay often says that to gain the kingdom of Heaven you need to do three things, Know, Love, and Serve the Lord. So deeply entwined those three little words an entire way of life, to Know you must Love, to Love you must Serve, to Serve you must Know. Be careful to not allow any part of your being let any part of those three little words become watered down. You are the cup of water being offered to the body of Christ because you belong to Christ.

Five Minute Bible Study

Mark 9:38-43; 45; 47-48

Jesus uses a “surgical metaphor” to speak about the importance of avoiding the “occasions of sin.” Jesus is not proposing self-mutilation of hands, feet and eyes. Rather, he is saying that if there is anything in our lives which is coming between us and our relationship with God, it must be rooted out. The rooting out may be as painful as a surgical operation. It may seem like cutting out a part of our own body, but if we are to experience happiness and peace, it must be done. Jesus ends by saying that spiritual surgery is certainly preferable to Gehenna (Hell).

Sometime this week, whether on your own, while sitting at the family dinner table or talking with friends, reflect on the following question : What needs to be cut out of your life to bring you closer to God?

SAINT HELEN’S WOMEN’S MINI-RETREAT “Mary, our Mother, our Hope and Help on Life’s Journey” God is calling to the hearts of women! Mary, the Mother of our Savior will help you on your journey in Life! She has many graces to pour out on you and your Family! Come to be refreshed by God’s love through the help of our Blessed Mother at our Mini-Retreat on Saturday, November 7th starting at 12:30. Information and registration will be in the Gathering Space starting Oct. 3rd-4th. Don’t miss this opportunity to receive all that God is waiting to give you!

SYRIAN REFUGEES: Pope Francis has asked all European Churches to help support the thousands of refugee families fleeing Syria. While the United States is deciding if and how many families we will allow into this country, we at St Helen Parish have decided that the need in Europe is immediate, and feel we need to do our share. We have contacted a Parish in Kettering, England, that is in the process of trying to adopt a family, and hope to help them aid and support this family. We hope to have details in the very near future.

PARISH MEETING ROOM: We have turned to old 5th and 6th grade unit into our new parish meeting room, called the PMR. This room is available to all parish groups for meetings. We will also be using the new school music room for smaller meetings. Please call Mary at the parish office ext 206 to schedule your meeting. Since we are all sharing these rooms, pictures will be posted in each space showing how you are responsible for leaving the room set up. There is also a list of instructions on caring for these spaces available in the office.

FIRST FRIDAY MASS AT SAINT HELEN’S ON OCTOBER 2ND AT 7:00PM: All are invited to celebrate the First Friday of October Gather your family and come for this wonderful opportunity. Jesus promises: In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.

THE HEALING MINISTRY will have healing prayer teams available after the First Friday 7:00 pm Mass on Friday, October 2, 2015. If you would like to schedule a healing session on another day, please contact Sue White : 440-213-9242, or send an email request to .

"IT'S A MATTER OF LIFE..."

The legislation to defund Planned Parenthood passed the House. Its passage is being acclaimed by politicians and national prolife groups. The bill is seriously flawed. Its language creates a class of human beings who are excluded from protection by the bill. It defunds all abortions except those of children conceived in rape or incest. For these children, their dismemberment will continue unabated. These children face execution solely for the sins of their father and killing them will still not "unrape" their mother, will serve to destroy the evidence of the violent crime to which she was a victim, and will protect the criminal who committed the crime.

40 DAYS FOR LIFE: From September 23 through November 1, you are invited to join other Christians for 40 Days for Life – 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion.
