Unit Introduction to Spreadsheets Topic Charts Content Insert and format different chart types to represent data in a spreadsheet.

Objectives: Evaluation: 1.) SWBAT analyze information 1.) Students will print their correctly in a spreadsheet and create assignments and hand them in. appropriate charts to represent the information.

CELS: Where they are evident in the lesson: NUM - while students use the functions to perform calculations.

Pre Requisite Learning: previous experience with inserting charts into a spreadsheet.

Presentation Classroom Management/Notes Bell Work: Please pick up your completed assignments!! Place them in your folder and record your marks on your marks sheet! Set: (2 mins) Tell students that we are going to continue working with charts today. We will be analyzing real information and creating spreadsheets that include charts to represent our findings. Development: (40 mins) 1. Hand out the assignment to students. 2. Go over the expectations for the assignments and show some examples of how their assignments may work. 3. Show them how to navigate the weather network site to search for their home city etc. 4. If they want to research another city that its completely fine. Be sure to ask me first. 5. Allow students the rest of class to work on the chart activities. Tell them if they are not completed their assignment from yesterday they can work on that as well. 6. With part 3 from yesterday, the chart on the board was not set up - show them how it would look if they did the same way I had asked for it to it wrong. be in the assignment. I did that on purpose so that you had to read the directions. 7. Tell them they all need help learning to read the directions in this class because they are missing small parts of a lot of assignments and losing marks. 8. Show them the sample of how it should look if they have done it correctly. If they have done it wrong they can redo it. 9. Give students the rest of the class to work on their assignments. Tell them they will need to find the research themselves. Closure: (2 mins) Tell students that we will be having a test on spreadsheets next Wednesday most likely. But if not, it will for sure be sometime next week.

Chart Activities:

Create the charts asked below. Be sure to include chart titles, label the values, axis etc. For each chart provide an explanation of what it is representing. Be sure to print GRIDLINES, HEADINGS AND THE CHART! Each activity is worth 10 marks!

1. Create a pie chart that represents the following information. Keep in mind that some charts are better for representing specific data than others.

In a recent survey of 100 people about the upcoming election the following information was discovered: 39 people are voting for the Conservatives 24 people said they are voting for the Liberals 19 are voting for the New Democratic Party 9 are voting for the Bloque Du Quebecois 8 are voting for the Green Party 1 is not voting.

Show the information appropriately and use percents as the values in the chart as well as explain what the graph is representing.

2. Using www.theweathernetwork.com research the long term forecast for Regina. Create a new worksheet that will contain the data for the highs and lows for the dates given, as well as a line graph that displays the information. Be sure to label the x and y axis appropriately. You should have one display the days of the week and the other display the temperature.

3. Using www.theweathernetwork.com look under annual statistics to find the average snowfall for Regina. Record the given information in a spreadsheet and create a bar graph showing this information. Be sure to include all of the months, even if they have no snowfall.
