Course Objectives:

Introduction to Operations Research; formulation of linear programming problems; graphical solution; the Simplex algorithm; duality and sensitivity analysis; transportation and assignment problems; Integer and Goal programming.

Prerequisites: MATH 241

Textbook: “Operations Research: An Introduction”, by Hamdy A. Taha, (8th Ed.)

Grading Policy:

Mid-Term Exam 30 % (Wednesday, 28 Thul-Qeada 1432 (Oct. 26th , 2011)).

Final 35 % (As scheduled by the University).

Homework 5 % Due at the following class after assignment.

Quizzes 5 % Pop Quizzes (No make up at all).

Participation 5 % (and attendance).

Project 20% (Grading Policy is in the next page).

Cheating: Any observed act of dishonesty will automatically result in an F grade.

Course contents:

1)Introduction to Operations Research.

2)Formulation of Linear Programming Problems.

3)Graphical Solution and the Simplex Algorithm.

4)Duality and Sensitivity Analysis.

5)Transportation and Assignment Problems.

6)Integer and Goal Programming.

  1. Formulation of Integer Programming Problems.
  2. Branch and Bound Technique.

Project:Due Monday, 4th of Thul-Hijjah 1432 (Oct 31st , 2011). Teams consisting of 2 members should choose the topic (representing a real industrial application). Teams are expected to formulate the problem; the formulation should be approved by the instructor (as scheduled below) before proceeding with any subsequent work.

  1. Progress Reports (10 points/100):
  • 1st report:Approval from the Company where project is to be conducted; due Saturday, 26th ofShawal 1432 (Sept. 24th, 2011).
  • 2nd report: Approval of the Topic;

dueSaturday, 30th of Shawal 1432 (Sept. 28th, 2011).

  • 3rd report:Approval of the Approach;

dueSaturday, 3rd of Thul-Qeada 1432 (Oct. 1st , 2011).

  • This Grade Breakdown Sheet should be at the back of the cover page.

5 points.

  1. General issues (20 points/100):
  • Language (Grammar/ Spelling) 12 points.

  • Practicality of the project (Validation & Verification) 15 points.

  • Statement of the problem (detailed). 5 points.
  • Showing what was done (technical). 5 points.
  • Analysis & conclusions (technical). 15 points.
