Introduction to American Sign Language
Course Information:
· This class is a basic introduction to American Sign Language (ASL). American Sign Language is used throughout the deaf community and has its own vocabulary, grammar, and culture. In this class students be introduced to the manual alphabet, numbers, vocabulary, phrases, conversations, and deaf culture in ASL. Practicing in class and at home will be part of the class requirements.
· Movies and videos will be shown that will help students understand vocabulary, phrases, and deaf culture. Videos consist of titles from Dawn Sign Press and Lifeprint.com. Movies that may be shown during the class are:
-Through Deaf Eyes -A Summer to Remember -A Conversation with Koko
-No Ordinary Hero -The Miracle Worker

Single Subject Notebook, Composition Book, or Lined Paper.

Classroom Expectations:
· Be Respectful Be Ready for Class Participate
Grading Policy:
· Grading is based on class participation, class activities, and a quizzes. The points you earn help determine your grade.
· This is an elective class. My policy is that as long as you participate in class, complete all required work, and earn points needed, students can earn a passing grade.
o A = 90-100% with excellent participation, all work/assignments/tests are exceptional and completed on time.
o B = 80-89% with good participation, all work/assignments/tests are well done and completed on time.
o C = 70-79% with satisfactory participation, most work/assignments/tests are satisfactory and completed.
o D or below = Student rarely participates, does not complete assignments or practice, and has not earned enough points.
Missing/Late/Incomplete Work and Absences
· Most work will be completed in class. Homework will consist of practicing what is taught in each lesson.
o Students can practice the units at www.lifeprint.com
· If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to obtain missed work.

o All handouts for absent students are located in the class box in the back of the room.

**All necessary instructional supplies will be furnished to students without charge. Donations of school materials are very much appreciated, but they are not required.
