Hatchmen If the stevedoring companies are sincerely concerned about safety on the job then the hatchmen must be retained as this position is one of the most important of the gang. Often circumstances arise where the hatchman can see what those below and the crane operator may not see. One injury or death is one too many, especially when these incidences can surely be avoided by the presence of the hatchman.

Stevedoring Should the guidance material refer to the qualifications (Cert II, Cert III qualifications and Cert IV in Stevedoring) that have been developed for the stevedoring industry?

Of course it is important to have qualified and trained workers on the waterfront.

Safety Induction Should the newly developed stevedoring ‘safety skill-set’ be used to skill-set underpin safety inductions?

Yes, definately. Once again, if the stevedoring companies are fairdinkum about safety then safety units should be included in inductions. Even the most fundamental things as 'Look up and live!'

Use of Should the safety checklists, which set out examples of the types of checklists hazards, and acceptable/unacceptable ways of handling those hazards, be maintained in the guidance material? NGMW490

Definately agree!
