In World Geography we are studying economics, globalization and resources in the current unit. As part of the unit, students are assigned to prepare a recipe using chocolate, which is a global resource. The cacao tree grows only in rainforests regions of the world. Cacao is in danger of disappearing because the rainforests of our world are being destroyed. We will be discussing solutions to this issue as part of our unit.

  1. Students are to write a letter to a teacher at CyFalls (instructions will be given in class) that includes

Typed or written directions for a favorite chocolate recipe

An explanation of why it is their favorite (Grandma’s cookie recipe, holiday treat, etc…)

Information regarding Fair Trade products (such as chocolate) in their letter.

In order to include information about Fair Trade products, students must do some online research on their own.

  1. This letter is a daily grade for our Economics unit. Students need 2 copies of the letter > one for my records and one for me to deliver to the teacher. Letters are due on WEDNESDAY, 2/13/13 so they can be distributed to teachers.
  1. Students will be participating in a ‘chocolate party’ onFRIDAY, 2/15/13. They are to bring a dish made with our favorite global resource: chocolate! Please have your child make enough of their treat for 25 people. Students may make any foodthat contains chocolate; they may not bring chocolate drinks for this assignment. Please send the chocolate to school in a container that does not need to be returned.
  1. To get full credit for these assignments, students must turn in

a. Somethingmade at home that includes chocolate. (Hopefully Fair Trade chocolate…)

b. A copy of the recipe for the food they brought to the chocolate party.

c. 2 copies of the teacher letter.

The Chocolate letter

As part of our Economics unit, you will need to write a letter to your other favorite Cy-Falls teacher or your favorite athletic coach that includes information on globally traded resources such as cacao and information regarding Fair Trade products.

Two copies of this letter are due to me on WEDNESDAY, 2/13/13

Greeting: Dear ______

Paragraph 1: Tell your teacher/coach why you decided to write this letter to them in particular. Reintroduce yourself if you are not currently in their class

  1. Explain what we are studying in Geography right now > Economic Geography, resources and their diffusion.
  2. Define the concept of Fair Trade (research this on your own) and tell them about at least 3 Fair Trade products besides cacao/chocolate.
  3. Tell them 3 things you have learned about economic geography, resources and Fair Trade.

Paragraph 2: Explain your purpose for writing > to invite them to the chocolate party where we will be eating an important global resource, i.e. chocolate! The party will feature homemade cacao treats that you have made. The party is in my room, 2204 after school on FRIDAY, 2/15/13.Teachers love being invited to this party so they will be happy to get your letter from me.

Paragraph 3: Include a copy of your favorite chocolate recipe for them to enjoy. Give an explanation of why this is your favorite treat. Be sure to find out if any of the items in your recipe are Fair Trade products and note that in your letter.

Sign your name to the letter and also print/type your name under your signature for legibility purposes.
