Aim

To establish informative, pleasing presentation of children’s written work. To establish an element of agreed continuity and progressing from Primary 1 to Primary 7 Programme.

LANGUAGE

Primary 1

Using unlined jotters, from the Spring term the children write the DAY at the top left hand side of the page. From the beginning of the Summer term they add the month in words.

Primary 2

Children continue to use unlined jotters as before with the DAY and DATE as before and on the next line the HEADING. From January these are underlined on the line below.

Primary 4 and 5

Jotter in use 1A1 with margin for numbered or lettered items and teacher’s correction code. DAY and DATE in words and underlined on the line below. On the next line children write the HEADING and it is underlined as before. There will be a continuous line from the margin to the end of the page on completion of the task or to mark that work is finished for the day.

Primary 6 and 7

Jotter A1 or similar with printed margin. If there is no printed margin then one is drawn 2cms wide as used for Primary 4 and 5. First line, DATE in words and title of book and page. Underline on the line below. Next line, name of task underlined as before. On completion of work as set out for Primary 4 and 5.

USE OF PENS

Primary 7 only for Handwriting jotters and redrafted work. Primary 6/7 for display purposes.

MATHEMATICS

Primary 1

Unlined jotters to be used. From the beginning of the Spring term DAY at the top left hand side.

Primary 2

Unlined jotters until Christmas and from then on squared jotters are used with the DATE and HEADING underlined from January.

Primary 4 ,5 ,6 and 7

Jotter to be used IC2, no margins, one figure in each square. Opinions differ when writing fractions. (a) 2 squares vertically (b) one square with slanting line e.g. . Two empty squares between examples where appropriate, one empty row underneath. Continuous line under work each day. Date in figures with book title and page, underlined on the line below row of empty squares, followed on next row with title of exercise and underlined as stated. Decimal point on the line between squares.

Progress tests to be written in a separate jotter to be kept in PROGRESS FOLDERS.

MONITORING/EVALUATING

The Head Teacher will monitor and evaluate the implementation of this policy by
