Who we are ….
The Institute of Medical Ethics (IME) is a charitable organisation dedicated to improving education and debate in medical ethics. We aim to advance the education of medical practitioners and students in the understanding and practice of medical ethics and law to further integrate these disciplines into clinical practice.

We run a membership scheme, organise conferences and provide grants and awards to UK based students and others pursuing our objectives. Last year we gave out over £30,000 so why not see how we can help you?

What we offer ….

We offer bursaries of up to £600 to UK based undergraduates to study medical ethics issues during their electives, as well as scholarships of up to £2,000 to support medical ethics internships or towards the cost of an intercalated degree in medical ethics or an allied subject.

Want to host a meeting or conference where medical ethics is a substantial component and which promote understanding of ethical issues related to health care? We offer institutional grants of up to £500 to allow you to do just that. Conference grants of up to £220 are also awarded to undergraduates to support attendance at events such as these.

Each year we award essay prizes of up to £300 to Foundation Year doctors. The best of these essays is also awarded the Robert Hillman Essay Prize of £250. We also award the annual Mark Brennan Prize, giving up to £200 to medical students and Foundation Year doctors who use video, visual art, photography, short stories etc to express their feelings and reactions to ethical issues they have met in their clinical attachments.
