Name: ______Date: ______
Exercise 1: Distinguishing between ionic and molecular compound and learning about charges of ions
Remember: if the compound contains all NON-METAL atoms, then it is MOLECULAR.
Compound Name / Chemical Formula / Ionic or MolecularCalcium chloride / CaCl2
Iron (III) oxide / Fe2O3
Carbon monoxide / CO
Water / H2O
Magnesium sulfate / MgSO4

Show HOW an ionic compound is formed between Aluminum and Sulphur. You must show electron transfer from a metal to a non-metal.
Naming Binary and Multivalent Ionic Compounds
Exercise 3: Writing formulas for IONIC COMPOUNDS
Metal + non-metal / Charge on metal / Charge on non-metal / Criss-cross (show work) / Ionic formulaCalcium + nitrogen

Manganese (IV) + sulphur
Strontium + selenium
Gold (III) + iodine
Titanium (II) + carbon
Writing NAMES for ionic compounds
Rules:
1. Identify the positive ion (metal ion) and the negative ion (non-metal ion) first.
2. Always name the metal FIRST.
3. If the METAL is a multivalent transition metal, then indicate in the brackets the Roman numeral that corresponds to the charge. Example: Fe2+ iron (II) and Fe3+ iron (III)
4. Name the non-metal SECOND, but change the name of the non-metal so that it ends in IDE. Example: chloride, sulphide, oxide, iodide, nitride, carbide, etc.
