Police Witness Shooting, Apprehend Four Suspects

And Recover Three Guns

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that police have apprehended four suspects and recovered three guns after witnessing a shooting in progress near the intersection of 15th Avenue and 18th Street shortly before 5 p.m. this evening.

Two officers patrolling together, one each from Newark and Irvington, comprising a Newark/Irvington border patrol, were traveling eastbound on 15th Avenue when they witnessed the occupants in a black Audi stop the vehicle and shoot a man standing near the intersection South 18th Street.

After shooting the victim, the Audi’s occupants fled. When they saw the approaching patrol, they began driving erratically and crashed into a Nissan at the intersection of 15th Avenue and South 19th Street. After crashing, the four suspects ran from the Audi.

Through the combined efforts the two border patrol officers and responding backup officers from Irvington and Newark, three of the four suspects were immediately apprehend and three guns were recovered from the vehicle. An Essex County Sheriff Department’s K-9 unit responded and shortly thereafter located the last suspect hiding in an unoccupied building nearby on South 18th Street.

The shooting victim is being treated at an area hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and is expected to be released. The driver of the Nissan reported complaints of pain and was examined at the scene by EMS.

The Audi was reported stolen in East Orange on July 13, 2017.

The suspects, all from Newark. have been tentatively identified as Quaseam Clyburn and Marcus Baskerville, both 18, and two 17-year old juvenile males. Each is expected to be charged with aggravated assault and weapons possession offenses at a minimum.

“I commend the work of all law enforcement officers involved in the apprehension of these armed suspects, particularly the two officers who comprise the Newark Irvington Patrol,” Director Ambrose said. “Our officers risk their lives daily as evidenced today when they confronted armed suspects who had just shot someone. As a nation, we must do more to keep guns out of the hands of those who want to use them to kill and injure other people. It’s pathetic that our current system is failing us. More needs to be done to stem the availability of illegal guns.”
