For all classes: After you hand the test out, read the following statement and the passage below. Then ask the questions listed. The students will answer on their test paper #’s 33-36.

Read the following to the class:

For questions 33 through 36, you will be tested on your listening skills. I will read a passage to you and you must listen carefully as I will only read it once. I will then ask you questions about the passage you must answer. I can repeat the questions for you, but I cannot repeat any part of the story. You may take notes during this reading or sit quietly and listen.

Listen carefully as I read you a story of a window cleaner’s accident.

It was early in the morning of March 16, a bright, beautiful day. We had just arrived at work on the top floor of the old Planter’s Building in Philadelphia.

We saw a window clean who spent almost two hours setting up pulleys and a platform. He was finally ready to step out onto the platform and clean windows.

Thirty minutes later, we saw a gigantic purple balloon floating past the windows. The purple balloon looked about 50 feet tall. Hanging from the balloon was a wicker basket with a beautiful woman in it. The basket swung too close to the building, and appeared to knock the window cleaner off the platform. We all rushed to the window to see what had happened. The woman in the basket had grabbed the window cleaner, and his feet were kicking in midair. The balloon finally glided away from the building, and landed safely in a globe willow tree in the park across the street near the fountain.

After reading the passage, ask the following questions and give the students time to write their answers.

33. In what city did the event take place?

34. What color was the balloon?

35. Who was in the basket?

36. Where did the balloon land?

When finished with this portion of the test, they may continue with the rest of it.
