COURSE DESCRIPTION AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
The study of human speech is the study of ethics, practical philosophy and eloquent expression of the human spirit. These are the elements of rhetoric and as such the course examines (1) rhetorical and communication theories, (2) the history and causes of rhetoric, and (3) the ethical decisions that rhetoricians face. In addition, the students in the course will put rhetoric into action through public presentation and rhetorical analysis. This course will explore:
· How to analyze an audience
· How to research a search
· How to organize various types of presentations
· How to prepare and use a speech outline
· How to make and use appropriate visual aids
· How to evaluate and critique presentations
· How to deliver a speech in a conversational manner without memorizing or reading the information
INSTRUCTOR EXPECTATIONS AND POLICIES
Attendance: Attendance is mandatory, and will count for 100 points of your total grade. (Each class is worth approx. 3.5 points.) Attendance will be taken during the first five minutes.
Tardiness: Tardiness will not be tolerated. As in the workplace, you will be expected to arrive on time and be prepared. Two tardies equal one absence. (Leaving class early is counted the same as a tardy.)
Plagiarizing: Plagiarizing is a serious academic offense. If you are caught plagiarizing an assignment, you will receive a 0 for the assignment and an official FIU written notice. Refer to the section on plagiarism in the FIU Student Handbook.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
This syllabus is a contract of understanding between professor and student. If the assignments and grading system are not acceptable, then the student needs to negotiate a change by midnight Sunday on the second week of class or accept the rules as written.
