3. The curriculum offer

Key Stage 3 KS3 is a two year programme covering the National Curriculum subjects. Students are ‘streamed’, with those identified as the most able being taught all subjects in a single class on each campus. Students identified as needing additional support will be taught within a ‘Transition’ group for non-practical subjects. English, Maths and Science will be broadly set according to ability. Towards the end of Year 8 students choose their GCSE subjects to begin as Key Stage 4 courses in Year 9.

Key Stage 4 KS4 is a three year programme leading to GCSE and equivalent examinations. All students follow a core curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Studies, Physical Education and ICT. Students choose four subjects from a range of options, some of which lead to vocational qualifications, and are encouraged to choose subject combinations that lead to the English Baccalaureate. Students are entered for a GCSE short-course at the end of Year 9, with the majority of other exams taken in at the end of Year 11. Links with local colleges of FE provide opportunities for part or full time specialist courses for pupils of all ability levels. English and Maths are set according to ability into 6 groups on each campus. In science, students are guided on to one of three courses (BTEC, GCSE double science, GCSE triple science) depending on prior attainment. Sixth Form Students who stay on in the Sixth Form are offered a wide range of courses at Level 3 including AS, A2 and BTEC Nationals as well as some one year courses at Level 2. Students are well supported through a tutorial programme that offers them career planning and social skills development as well as considerable support for university and college applications. A consortium system operates at Sixth Form level within Enfield and some courses are offered through this arrangement. As a result some students from other schools join courses at Edmonton County and some students from our school join Sixth Form courses in another school.

SMSC and Additional provision The social, moral, spiritual and cultural (SMSC) development of students is promoted through subject teaching, pastoral guidance, a tutor time programme, an assembly programme and Enrichment Day workshops. In addition:  A range of extracurricular activities including Enrichment Days, educational visits, musical performances, drama presentations, celebration assemblies and prize giving ceremonies provide opportunities to achieve beyond the classroom.  A programme of extracurricular extension provision provides opportunities to enhance learning beyond the classroom for students identified as able, gifted and talented. Further details can be found in the school’s AG&T policy and detailed subject provision statements.  The school council promotes responsibility and students are encouraged to take part in voluntary community work.  A mentoring programme supports students in identifying strategies to assist them attaining the highest standards.
