Since then, hospitalist medicine has grown very quickly and currently there are approximately 15,000 practicing hospitalists in the US, making it one of the fastest growing physician specialties. Most hospitalists are internal medicine specialists. The traditional model where the primary care physician sees patients at the office and continues a patient’s care in the hospital has given way to separate physician groups providing outpatient and inpatient care. Most community-based general physicians no longer admit patients to the hospital. This function is now performed by hospitalists, who are present at the hospital all day and therefore can respond to test results quickly and be available for family consultations.
