Why would the owner of the vineyard pay the laborers who worked only one hour the same wages as those who worked all day? The parable is a story of the difference between justice and mercy, between our world and God’s world. Justice would say that those who worked longer should have received more money, and it is easy to understand why those workers are upset. Mercy, on the other hand, does not give people what they de- serve, but what they need. The workers who only worked that last hour of the day still needed to feed their family. The vineyard owner give them what they needed. PASTORAL STAFF Rev.
