Some amazing movies and TV shows featuring some awesome Asians Netflix ● Avatar the Last Airbender - I’m not sure how Asian this is, but I’ll count ​ ​ it because it’s out on Netflix and AMAZING. ● Never Have I Ever - A TV series created by Mindy Kalining about an ​ ​ Indian-American girl, Devi, navigating high school and family. ● The Half of It - The director is Alice Wu and it is a complex ​ comedy/drama coming of age story that touches on LGBTQ issues as well. Recommended by T. Joyce. ● Always Be My Maybe - A rom-com following childhood friends Sasha ​ ​ and Marcus (comedians Ali Wong and Randall Park from Fresh Off the ​ Boat) as they reconnect in San Francisco. ​ ● Ali Wong: Baby Cobra - Her first Netflix comedy stand-up special (she’s ​ ​ very pregnant). ● Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife - Her second Netflix comedy stand-up ​ ​ ​ special (she’s very pregnant. Again). ● Hassan Minhaj: Homecoming King - A Netflix stand-up comedy ​ special. Spoiler alert: he doesn’t get crowned homecoming king. ● Patriot Act - Hassan Minhaj’s Netflix series where he dives into topical ​ ​ and relevant political and social issues. ASA recommends the episode on Affirmative Action. ● Kim’s Convenience - A TV show about a Korean-Canadian family that ​ runs a convenience store in Toronto. ● To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and To All the Boys: P.S. I still ​ ​ Love You - The first two instalments of a movie trilogy following Laura ​ ​ Jean and her very interesting love life. ● Master of None - Aziz Ansari’s Netflix Original series following Dev and ​ his life as a young struggling actor. ● American Crime Story: The Assasination of Gianni Versace - The ​ ​ T.V. miniseries follows Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss), the real life serial killer that killed fashion designer Gianni Versace ● Period. End of Sentence. - Academy Award winning documentary ​ ​ about the stigma of menstruation, and women making low-cost pads in rural India. Hulu ● Fresh off the Boat - Based off of Eddie Huang’s memoir, this T.V. show ​ examines Eddie’s family’s life moving from D.C.’s Chinatown to suburban Orlando in the 90’s. ● Killing Eve - This T.V. drama follows Eve (Sandra Oh from Grey’s ​ ​ ​ Anatomy) , a bored government worker whose interest with female ​ assassins becomes troubling when she’s pulled into an off the books investigation hunting down international assassin, Villanelle, who becomes obsessed with the woman who’s investigating her, Eve. ● The Mindy Project - In this T.V. show, Mindy Kaling plays an OB/GYN ​ who is trying to navigate her personal and professional life as she strives to be the “perfect” woman with a “perfect” love life. ● Parasite - The 2019 Academy Award winning film for Best Picture is a ​ ​ Korean film about class discrimination by following the relationship between the Park and the Kim family. ● Pen15 - An uncomfortable comedic T.V. series about being 13. The two ​ lead actresses play the 13-year-old versions of themselves, while all the other kids are actually 13. ● Bend It Like Beckham - A movie comedy about an Indian-American ​ ​ teenage girl trying to balance her love and talent for soccer and traditional Indian gender roles. DISNEY+ ● Mulan - The CLASSIC Disney princess movie. Duh. ​ ​ ● Moana - Disney’s 2016 “princess” movie where Moana and demigod Maui ​ ​ work together to save her people. ● Big Hero 6 - A Disney animated movie about a 14-year-old boy, Hiro, who ​ builds a robot that’s sole purpose is to take care of people. Hiro and his robot, Baymax, work together to become heroes. ● Aladdin - Another CLASSIC Disney princes movie. Disney+ has both the ​ ​ animated and live-action version. Amazon Prime/Rent ● Isle of Dogs - A Wes Anderson animated film about dogs in a fantasy ​ ​ Japan. Because it’s a Wes Anderson film it doesn’t make all the sense in the world, and is pretty absurd. ● Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - A classic Chinese martial arts movie ​ ​ mixed with a love story between a Qing Dynasty warrior and a wealthy heiress. ● Crazy Rich Asians - A romcom that tackles love, tradition, class divides, ​ ​ and identity. Everyone knows this film. The Asian Black Panther , as in an ​ ​ all Asian cast. ● Rush Hour - Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker show us the power of having ​ ​ Black and Asian actors as leads together. An amazing comedy. ● The Farewell - The definition of a comedy-drama. Awkwafina is ​ ​ incredible in this story about family obligations. It follows a family that comes back together in China to see their grandmother dying of cancer, who they’ve decided not to tell her. “Chinese people have a saying: when people get cancer, they die. But it’s not the cancer that kills them, it’s the fear.” .
