HIP HOP 101: How To Reach & Teach Today’s Hip Hop Generation Date: 8/8/2020 ​ Time: 2:45pm EST. ​ Facilitators: Dr. Damiso A. Josey, Mr. Kareem Spence M.A. & Ms. Jamey ​ ​ Cohen M.A. What is culture? ● The beliefs and actions that define a group of people’s way of life. ● Incorporates: Attitudes, beliefs, language, customs, rituals, behavior, faith/religion, food, art/drama/music. ● To come to an understanding of someone else’s culture you must except your own cultural bias and experiences with that culture. ● Students must feel valued by acknowledging and centering their culture in their learning. ● What we value shapes our behaviors. ● Educators must become students of their students. ● Rap is something you do. Hip Hop is something you live. The power of perception ● Hip Hop culture is more than the common misconceptions of rap music. If you cannot see past these common misconceptions, you will never be able to understand Hip Hop music and culture. ● Do not judge a student by the chapter that you walk in on. Developing your culturally responsive teacher skills 1. Affirming both the student and teacher cultural identity 2. Develop student critical consciousness 3. High student achievement Brief History and pillars of Hip Hop ● Hip Hop culture was born from the passion and experiences of the 1960/70’s coming off the heels of the Vietnam War, Civil Rights Movement and desegregation. ● After being denied access to educational and art spaces, children began to create their own art out of what was available to them. What would develop are the 9 elements of Hip Hop culture. ● Breakdancing, Rapping, Graffiti Art, DJing, Beatboxing, Street Fashion, Street Language, Street Knowledge, Street Entrepreneurialism. ● The four pillars of Hip Hop are: Djing, Emceeing, Breakdancing and Graffiti Art Classroom Activities ● Freestyle Friday – A time for the creative expression of social/political/personal issues. ● The Cypher – using the foundation of the cypher to exercise students ability to compete with classmates on a give topic ● Call and Response – Using call and response to facilitate discussions ● STEM Activities – Using the DJ Quick Mix formula to discuss math elements. Understanding the science behind breakdancing. The technology behind DJing and music production.
