Discussion Questions Message Text: Ruth 2 Message Title: Picking Through Life’s Leftovers BIG IDEA: In this message Bryan talked about how when picking through the leftovers of life, God’s kindness leads us to abundant joy. Bryan’s three Observations: 1. God’s kindness sometimes is found in the leftovers. 2. God’s kindness isn’t accidental. 3. God’s kindness turns our mourning into joy. Questions: 1. The idea of being kind can sometimes be cliché. But kindness also has great power to transform us. Can you think of a time when you were deeply impacted by someone else’s kindness? 2. Read Ruth 2. What aspects of the chapter cause questions or curiosity? 3. In v2, Ruth asks Naomi about going to glean in someone else field. The practice of gleaning was common in ancient Israel. Read the different laws about gleaning in Lev. 19:9, 23:22, Deut. 24:19. How does the idea of gleaning shape your understanding of God and your view of the law? 4. In v3, the way the chapter describes Ruth coming to Boaz’s field is somewhat accidental, “As it turns out…” However, Bryan said in his message that God is sovereign over the entire story of Ruth. • How would you define God’s sovereignty? • Why is the idea of God’s sovereignty important in the story of Ruth? • Why is it important in our own lives? 5. A simple definition of God’s sovereignty is “God is in control.” If that’s true why is it important that God is also kind? Apart from the story in Ruth can you think of other stories in scripture that demonstrate God’s (or Jesus’) kindness? 6. In this chapter Boaz interacts with Ruth in v8-16. What aspect of Boaz’s kindness resonates with you, and why? 7. In v20 Naomi’s demeanor changes. She’s able to recognize God’s kindness even though it’s been present the whole time. What things prevent us from seeing God’s kindness? 8. Reflection Question: Where is God’s kindness at work in your own life? How do you need to be responding to it? .
