The Cardinals swung in front early with two runs in the 3rd on an RBI fielder’s choice from CF Blake Drake and an RBI single from 1B John Nogowski. After Shew closed his sixth straight scoreless stanza, Springfield added to the lead with a solo home run from DH Chris Chinea and a run-scoring miscue committed by SS Chris Mariscal in the 7th, opening the advantage to four runs. RHP Junior Fernandez kept the Travs at bay in the 7th and 8th, before a final scoreless frame from RHP Derian Gonzalez in the 9th to close the 4-0 shutout. Shew named Pitcher of the Week… The Texas League announced on Monday that RHP Anthony Shew has been named Texas League Pitcher of the Week for 7/16-7/22. The 24 year old was outstanding through two starts on the week, going 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA, allowing just one run on nine hits in 13.0 innings, walking seven and striking out 12. His first start was a 7.0-inning one-run performance on 7/17, leading the Cardinals to the 3-2 win against the Naturals. He then finished the week on 7/22 with 6.0 scoreless innings, earning the win and pacing the Cardinals to the 4-0 shutout of the Travelers. Shew is the first Cardinals pitcher to earn Pitcher of the Week honors this season. 1B/C Chris Chinea, 1B John Nogowski, OF Victor Roache and OF Lane Thomas were previously named Texas League Player of the Week. Blake on base… OF Blake Drake extended his 14-game on-base streak with a pair of singles, a walk and an RBI on Sunday. During his streak, which dates back to 7/4, he is hitting .356 (16x45) with one homer, four doubles, 10 RBIs, 12 runs and eight walks. Come on home… 1B John Nogowski followed his three-RBI performance on Saturday with another RBI single on Sunday and has now driven in at least one run in five of his last nine games, with eight RBIs during that stretch. Mieses not missing… OF Johan Mieses notched a career-high four hits on Saturday, going 4x6 with a two-run home run and an RBI single. He has hit safely in five of his last seven games, batting.345 (10x29) with three homers, nine RBIs and five runs during that stretch. The recent turnaround comes after the 22 year old opened his first-career Springfield stint hitting .122 (6x49) with one homer and four RBIs through his first 13 games. The former Dodgers farmhand and Tulsa Driller started his first season as a Cardinal in High-A Palm Beach and hit .251 with 10 dingers and 40 RBIs in 65 games, earning Florida State League Midseason All-Star honors. Powering up… Just activated from the DL on Friday, 1B/C Chris Chinea made a powerful return to the lineup with a pair of doubles on Saturday and a solo blast on Sunday, his 12th round-tripper of the year. In 15 games since the All-Star Break, the Miami, FL native has hit safely in 11 of those games, batting .315 (17x54) with four home runs, two doubles, seven RBIs and nine runs.
