All sectors shrank during the quarter, except for the manufacturing, finance & insurance, information & communications and wholesale trade sectors. For the whole of 2020, the economy contracted by 5.4 per cent, a reversal from the 1.3 per cent growth in 2019. The sectors that provided support to the economy were the manufacturing, finance & insurance and information & communications sectors, which posted expansions in 2020. OVERALL PERFORMANCE The services producing industries collectively contracted by 4.7 per cent year-on-year in the fourth quarter, improving Fourth Quarter 2020 from the 8.3 per cent contraction in the previous quarter. Among the services sectors, only the finance & insurance The economy contracted by 2.4 per cent year-on-year in (4.9 per cent), information & communications (2.6 per the fourth quarter, an improvement from the 5.8 per cent cent) and wholesale trade (1.8 per cent) sectors posted contraction in the preceding quarter (Exhibit 1.1). On a positive growth. quarter-on-quarter seasonally-adjusted basis, the economy expanded by 3.8 per cent, following the 9.0 per cent growth Meanwhile, the construction sector shrank by 27 per cent in the third quarter.1 year-on-year in the fourth quarter, improving from the 53 per cent contraction in the third quarter. The sector’s growth was supported by robust Accommodation -19.7 expansions in the biomedical manufacturing, electronics Transportation & Storage -27.4 and precision engineering clusters. Output in the sector was weighed down by declines in both public sector and private sector construction works. 1 The strong GDP growth seen in the third quarter was due to the phased resumption of activities following the Circuit Breaker that was implemented between 7 April to 1 June 2020, as well as the rebound in activity in major economies during the quarter as they emerged from their lockdowns. 08 Economic Survey of Singapore 2020 Chapter 1 | Economic Performance Exhibit 1.2: GDP and Sectoral Growth Rates in 2020 For the whole of 2020, only the manufacturing, finance Manufacturing 7.3 & insurance and information & communications sectors contributed positively to GDP growth (Exhibit 1.4).
