Dancisin, Congress Coordinator/Operations Specialist COVER: Jose Clemente Orozco, Mural, Darmouth College The cover comes from “The Epic of American Civilization” a magnificent fresco painted between 1932 and 1934, by the Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco in Baker/Berry Library at Dartmouth College. The mural is a series of 24 panels depicting the development of American Civilization beginning with the march of the Aztecs out of Aztlan. “The important point regarding the frescoes of Baker Library,” wrote Orozco is “the fact that it is an AMERICAN idea developed in American forms, American feeling, and, as a consequence, into Americanstyle.” The profile in the front cover is part of an early panel entitled “Pre-Columbian Golden Age.” On the back cover are two panels. The one on the right is structured around the tall figure of a Mexican revolutionary surrounded by a group of bankers and military. One general is ready to kill him. The panel on the left is the last one in the mural. Its title is “Gods of the Modern World.” Commentary by Marysa Navarro.
