315.455 1941 Tab NOTE The census enumeration was carried out in full according to plan but the Government of India decided to restrict the tabulation for British India. Consequently the tables in this volume covel less than half the contemplated range and offer in effect only the distribution of the population by iJommunity and by province or state, district, tehsil and town. In many areas however village tables will also be produced by provincial governments. 'Opportunity has been taken however ~o sort wherever possible the 1/50 random sample takeu In every area. ·2. The slips in which the remaining unsorted information is to be found are stored in Qaea province against a possible reopening of tabulation ih happier circumstances. The area of the Biloch trans-frontier tract is included in that of Dera Ghazi Khan district. The differences between some of the areas shown in this table and those given in the corresponding tables of 1931 are due to territorial transfers and recalculations of areas by the Survey department. A" house" was defined at this census as a dwelling place of a commensal family. "Occupied house ~'means a census house. 3. "Towns" include municipalities, civil lines not included in municipal limits, cantonments ~nd other places of usually not less than 5.000 inhabitants and .possessing distinct urban characteristics. 'Cantonments" have been treated as forming part of the towns in which they are situated. " Village ,,. means a revenue village. " Urban" and" rural" refer to persons Ii ving in tOWlli! or villages as above defined. • . NOTE I.-A few villages of the Shahdara tehsil in'the Sheikhupura district with a population of 16,368 have been included within the­ lnmts of Lahore municipality, but they still remain part of the Shahdara tehsil for revenue and other administrative purposes. In this table,. theref<lre, the population of these villages has been included in the urban population of the Sheikhupura district. NOTE 2.-The population details for tehsils are given in Provincial Tables I and II. 4.
