Scope and Content: The Kit Collection is comprised of Multimedia Religious Education Kits published by the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and supplementary resources1968 to 1980.Each kit consisted of a box containing lesson plans, leader’s guides, and all other necessary materials for each course. Hugo J. Hollerorth was curriculum editor for the eighteen kits. Most were for older children and adults, but two particularly popular kits were The Haunting House for young children and About Your Sexuality for adolescents. Other subjects included decision making, freedom and responsibility, evolution, making meanings, building culture, communication, some Biblical material, and for adult congregational experiences in Unitarian Universalism. Arrangement: Kits are arranged alphabetically, by title. Within each kit box are original contents and commonly used additions. These additions are indicated in this list with an asterisk,*, following the title. Supplemental material pertaining to all kits is alphabetical at the end of the collection. History or Biographical Note: This curriculum was conceived in the context of cultural upheaval of the 1960s and educational trends in response to what was perceived as dogmatic, didactic instruction. The newly consolidated Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) struggled with issues of theology, authority, tradition, and how to prepare children and youth for a changing world. The kits were intended to advance the objective of helping them develop a “life-enhancing orientation to a power- filled world,” according to Hollerorth.
