Chevy, Today is March 1 and I’m a little ahead of my usual schedule because I’ll be gone for a couple of weeks. I need to have things ready before I leave so everything gets done in a timely fashion and you receive your newsletter on time. We’re getting a lot busier this month, so we’re working a little faster and harder to keep everything going out and keeping the shelves full. Never a dull moment. Our snow was basically all gone then we got an inch or so last night and it looks like a little more tomorrow. I hope it won’t be much as I’d like to get home tomorrow. The temps are supposed to be in the 50s and 60s this weekend, so hopefully all the snow will melt again. Time to go - a little more to do. Time to “think Spring.” ‘Til next time..... I haven’t in a family way” or simply ”expecting.” Apparently thought about fender skirts in years. When I was “brassiere” is a word no longer in usage. I said it the a kid, I considered it such a funny term. Made me other day and my daughter cracked up. I guess it’s think of a car in a dress. Thinking about fender skirts just “bra” now. “Unmentionables” probably wouldn’t started me thinking about other words that quietly be understood at all. disappear from our language with hardly a notice. It’s hard to recall that this word was once Like “curb feelers” and “steering knobs.” Since I’d said in a whisper - “divorce.” And no one is called a been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that “divorcee” anymore. Certainly not a “gay divorcee.” direction first. Come to think of it, “confirmed bachelors” and “career Any kid will probably have to find some girls” are long gone, too. elderly person over 50 to explain some of these Most of these words go back to the ‘50s, but terms. Steering knobs were handy as there was here’s a pure ‘60s word I came across the other day, usually almost 5 turns from lock to lock in those “rat fink.” Ohh, what a nasty put-down! days....before power steering became popular. And Here’s a word I miss, “percolator.” That was just curb feelers came in with the lowering and widening a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? of cars and white wall tires in the 1950’s. “Coffee maker.” How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for Remember “Continental kits”? They were this. rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that I miss those made-up marketing words that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln were meant to sound so modern and now sound Continental. They reflected the “old” days when spare so retro. Words like “DynaFlow” and “Electrolux” tires were carried in the open on the rear bumper. and introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with From necessity to sheik. When did we quit calling “SpectraVision!” them “emergency brakes?” At some point “parking Food for thought. Was there a telethon brake” became the proper term. But I miss the hint that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of of drama that went with “emergency brake.” I’m sad, that anymore. Maybe that’s what castor oil cured, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would because I never hear mothers threatening their kids call the accelerator the “foot feed.” Remember the with castor oil anymore. Some words aren’t gone, “starter button?” but are definitely on the endangered list. The one Here’s a phrase I heard all the time in my that grieves me most, “supper.” Now everybody youth but never anymore – “store-bought.” Of course, says “dinner.” Save a great word. Invite someone to just about everything is store-bought these days.
