Studio bot. hung. 27-28, pp. 5-74, 1996-97 (1998) REVIEW OF THE HYPHOMYCETES OF HUNGARY Á. RÉVAY Dept. of Botany, Hungarian Natural History Museum H-1476 Budapest, Pf. 222, Hungary A check list of Hyphomycetes species collected in Hungary is presented. A total of 1006 species and 19 varieties are enumerated. It involves published data and unpublished records from the col lection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum. Key words: Hyphomycetes, enumeration, Hungary INTRODUCTION In the last two parts of a serial publication VÖRÖS and LÉRÁNTH (1974a, b) presented for the first time the Hyphomycetes species of Hungary. During the last 20 years many new data have been accumulated from Hungary and the species concept within Hyphomycetes has changed considerably. The aim of the present study is to summarize again the data concerning Hyphomycetes species of Hungary in a form which follows the results of nomenclatural investigations. As a result of a nomenclatural revision of names published earlier some names turned out to be superfluous synonyms. Two species must be excluded be cause incorrectly were treated as Hyphomycetes: Ramularia nymphaeae Bres. is actually Colletotrichum nymphaeae (Pass.) van der Aa (Coelomycetes) and Ramularia repentis Oudem. is the anamorph of a smut (Entyloma ranunculi- repent is Stern.). VÖRÖS and LÉRÁNTH in their paper beside the published data reported some records obtained from the notes of Gusztáv MOESZ (1873-1946). Checking again these data some further species also must be excluded from the list because they were collected not in the present territory of Hungary: Cercospora acanthi (Kazan between Dubova and Plavisevica, now Romania), Cercospora campisilii (Prencsfalva, now Prencov and Pozsony, now Bratislava, Slovakia), Cercospora galegae (Kupinovo, Jugoslavia), Cercospora majanthemi (Rabsztyn and Zog- dansk, Poland), Cercospora myrthi (Dalmatia, Jugoslavia), Cercospora polymor- pha (Boksánbánya, now Bocsa Montana, Romania), Cercospora smilacina (Fiume, now Rijeka, Jugoslavia), Cladosporium soldanellae (Velebit, Jugosla via), Fusoma veratri (High-Tatra Mts, Slovakia), Ramularia sonchi-oleracei Studiu Boranicu Hungarica 27-28, 1996-97 Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest (Riga, Latvia), Ramularia winteri (Aranyosmarót, now Zlaté Morava, Slovakia), Sporotrichum aureum (Belgrád, now Beograd, Serbia). The following list includes data published in various papers and also unpub lished records from collections preserved in the Botanical Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum (BP). In case of some very common species I disregarded to present all the collecting data {e.g. Epicoccum purp uras cens). Most of the specimens listed were collected and identified by the same person. In other cases the name(s) of the collector(s) is(are) given in brackets before the name by whom the fungus in question was identified. The generic and species names included in this paper are arranged in al phabetical order. Each name is followed by the name(s) of the author(s) and the citation of its valid publication. The recently accepted names are used wherever it is possible for the specimens. Full synonym lists are not given after every species, only those names are presented which were published by Hungarian authors earlier. A list of synonym names is presented at the end of this study.
