Objectives: To learn about some National Wildlife Parks and Sanctuaries and how they help to protect and preserve wildlife of India. Week 2 Content: March 2021 GK 1. Jim Corbett National Park. ( famous for tigers) Jim Corbett National Park, which is a part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve, a Project Tiger Reserve lies in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The magical landscape of Corbett is well known and fabled for its tiger richness. Established in the year 1936 as Hailey National Park, Corbett has the glory of being India's oldest and most prestigious National Park. 2. Kaziranga National Park. ( famous for rhinoceros) One of the most sought after wildlife holiday destinations in India located in Assam , Kaziranga National park’s 430 square kilometer area sprinkled with elephant-grass meadows, swampy lagoons, and dense forests is home to more than 2200 Indian one-horned rhinoceros, approximately 2/3rd of their total world population. Week 2 Content: March 2021 GK 3. Bandipur National Park. ( famous for tigers) Bandipur National Park established in 1974 as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, is a national park located in the Indian state of Karnataka, which is the state with the second highest tiger population in India. 4. Gir national park. ( famous for Asiatic lions) Also known as Sasan gir . Besides Africa, Gir National Park in Gujarat is the only place in the world where you can spot lions roaming free in the wild. The Government notified the large geographical extent of Sasan Gir as wildlife sanctuary on 18th September, 1965 in order to conserve the Asiatic Lion. From a population of approximately 20 lions in 1913, they have risen to a comfortable 523 according to 2015 census. Week 2 Content: March 2021 GK 5. Keoladeo Ghana National Park. ( famous for migratory birds) The keoladeo Ghana National Park is regonised as on of the world’s most important bird breeding and feeding grounds. The park is home to over 370 species of birds and animals. It was also known as the breeding ground for the rare and elusive to spot Siberian crane. 6. Pariyar National Park. ( famous for elephants) Periyar National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary, locating in Thekkady, astounding location of Kerala, the Periyar National Park is considered as the most protected area for the elephants and the tigers.
