Ans: Solar is the sun and Lunar is the Moon. 2. Translate Solar and Lunar in arabic. Ans: Solar means “Shamsi” and lunar means “Qamari”. 3. Name all the months in the islamic calendar. Ans: Muharram, Safar, Rabi ul Awwal, Rabi uth Thani, Jamad ul Ula, Jamad ul Ukhra, Rajab, Shaban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhul Qa’dah and Dhul Hijjah. 4. What is the name of the moon when it appears in crescent shape? Ans: Hilal. Also, called a new moon. 5. What is the other name of Islamic Calendar? Ans: Hijri Calendar. 6. Explain the start and end of the Lunar month in the Hijri Calendar. Ans: Hijri calendar is Lunar, which means it follows patterns of the moon. The Lunar month starts when the moon appears in crescent shape or Hilal. This is called the “new moon”. Slowly, the crescent shape becomes thicker. A Badr or “full moon”occurs in the middle of the month. Then the full moon goes back to becoming thin like a crescent until it disappears. That's the end of the Lunar month. 7. What is Ramadan? Ans: Ramadan is the month of fasting. It is the ninth month of Islamic calendar. It starts when the new moon is spotted after the month of Shaban. 8. Translate fasting in Arabic. And what does it mean? Ans: Fasting is called Siyam in Arabic. Its literal meaning is intense scorching heat. It was named such because it burns the sins of the believers. It is the fourth pillar of Islam. This means it is Fard. one has to make up their missed fasts. Fasting was ordained in th 2 A.H. Siyam is the way of worshiping Allah by not eating or drinking from dawn to sunset. It also teaches us to be patient and disciplined. Ans: i) It helps us to gain Allah’s reward and forgiveness. ii) It trains us to increase our worship of Allah. iii) It trains us to have self control and taqwa. iv) It makes us understand how poor people feel. v) It trains us to maintain good manners. vi) It trains us on making more Du’aa. 10. What is Taraweeh? Ans: Muslima pray special prayers every night of Ramadan. This special salah is a total of 8 raka’at or 20 raka’at. We pray salat 2 raka’at at a time.It is offered after Isha and before Witr. 11. What is Laylatul Qadr? Ans: It is one special night that occurs in Ramdan. It is also called the Night of power. This was the first night when the Qur’an was first sent down to the lowest heaven. The night occurs on one of the last 10 nights of the month and muslims pray extra hard during this time especially on the odd nights. The reward of praying on Laylatul Qadr is equal to praying for 1000 months. 12. What is Suhoor and Iftar? Ans: The meal before dawn is called Suhoor. Prophet Muhammad sallalahu alayhi wa sallam strongly recommends muslims to have suhoor. He sallalahu alayhi wa sallam also referred to it as The Blessed Meal. Also, it keeps us energized throughout the day. Iftar means breaking the fasts at Maghrib when the sun sets. Our du’aas are accepted during this time. 13. Du’aa for breaking the fast. Ans: ‘Umar said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say when breaking his fast: “Dhahaba al-zama’ wa abtalat al-‘urooq wa thabata al-ajr in sha Allah (Thirst is gone, the veins are moistened and the reward is certain if Allah wills).” Just for reference, no need to write it in the exam. [Narrated by Abu Dawood, 2357; al-Daaraqutni, 25. Ibn Hajar said in al-Talkhees al- Habeer (2/202): al-Daaraqutni said, its isnaad is saheeh.] 14. What should we break our fast with? If there were no fresh dates, then with dried dates, and if there were no dried dates, then with a few sips of water. [For your information only. Narrated by Ahmad (12265); Abu Dawood, 2356. ] 15. Should a muslim delay breaking their fast at the time of Maghrib. Why or why not? Ans: Sahl ibn Sa’d that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The people will continue to do well so long as they hasten to break the fast.” [FYI Al-Bukhaari (1957) and Muslim (1098)] 16. Things that can break your fast. Ans: Drinking and drinking deliberately, monthly cycle, deliberately vomiting. 17. Who else is excused from fasting in Ramadan? Ans: The elderly, the sick, mothers expecting babies or feeding mothers and travelers. These people will have to make up for their fasts when they can before the next Ramadan. Elderly will have a different ruling according to their condition. 18. Is Taraweeh a fard prayer? Ans: No, it is a highly recommended sunnah prayer. 19. What are the benefits of Taraweeh prayer? To understand the Qur’an better. ii) We can read different surahs and have discussions about them with a knowledgeable person. iii) We can memorise surah by revising them daily. We should read, understand, implement in our lives and spread the word of Allah. iv) We also understand a lot about prophets from the Qur’an and understand how they used to trust Allah in every situation. 24. Why should we seek islamic knowledge? Ans: Seeking knowledge pleases Allah because the more we learn the more we understand about the prophetic ways. And this way we gain more hasanat that will please Allah. Allah created us and jinn so that we can worship Him. And by gaining knowledge we can understand how Allah wants us to worship Him. Islamic knowledge also improves our character and help us grow our character. 25. Write the du’a for increase in knowledge.
