The issue of the eleventh volum e of the Cornwall Marriages should be a matter of congratulation to all who in are interested family history , and especially to those who desire to trace the successive steps by which the present i ownersh p of land in the county has come about . The f Statute o Uses in the reign of King Henry V III . and the abolition of the more onerous feudal tenures in the reign of f King Charles I I . not only af orded greater facilities for the ’ b ut transfer of land , also increased the student s labour in i of obtaining ev dence such transfer . Modern manorial his ffi tory is beset with di culty . Younger sons and also daughters who under the old regime had often to be content with scant provision sometimes found themselves endowed with con side r abl e estates in l and . Such estates were frequently con ferred by deed or indenture of which no counterfoil was preserved either in the public record offices or in the larger m old collection s of uniments in private hands . Moreover the ' ' system of inguisztzom s post mor tem in which such settlements r i i or we e recorded was d scont nued . F perfecting the history of the descent of land recourse therefore has usually to be had to the present owners whose title deeds are often of little value to e l . the topograph r , and to wil s and parish registers And for the purpose of clearing up such diffi culties the present series has been found of considerab le value . An illustration will make this clear . I n 1 640 Thomas B ricke died and after his death it was found that he had been . possessed of the manor of Tre thwa ll T r e the we ll or in Ludgvan , and that Mary his sister , 1 6 the Wife of Michael Vyvyan was his heir . In 68 John Robyns and Loveday his wife conveyed the manor to Richard l H ob yn . The proble m wa s to discover how the manor came to John Robyns and the usual sources of information yielded f i no assistance . An examination o the Phillack marr ages i n I f i pr nte d i V olum e I . o the prese nt ser es revealed the fact 1 6 that in 77 John Robyns married Loveday, daughter of ii i c Michael V yvyan deceased . Other s m lar discove r es ould i be given . Moreover to the student of soc ology the part played by heredity can only be adequately considered by exam ining a series of ancestors and to him the Cornwall Marriages should be a welcome addition to his collection of m facts . Considering therefore the i portance of the work to the i ant quarian , genealogist , topographer and biologist , it is a matter for regret that the number of subscribers should still i be very small . An increase of subscr bers means an increase the of in size the volumes issued , and it is therefore hoped that those who are interested in the work will endeavour to secure co- of i the operation their friends . The ed tors have to acknowledge the assistance given them by Miss Blanche Shadwell , who has extracted and collated the St . Wenn ‘ D r Marriages , and by . Eagar, who has helped with St . Goran . L . To Mr . W H . Shadwell , the subscribers are ii m i indebted , as usual , for perm ss on to use the Bod n tran scripts for the purpose of correcting inaccuracies and supply in ing defects the parish registers . For the convenience of those subscribers who have joined , ff at di erent times, since the series was commenced , the following list of the parishes which have been dealt with is here given VOL UME 1.
