Response Journal #4 Week I: Nov. 5 - 9 Week II: Nov. 13 – 16 (Veterans Day, Nov. 12, no school) Check your due date, and remember… no late Journals are accepted. Entry 1: o Read “There Will Come Soft Rains” by Ray Bradbury [Teacher will provide copy] ! “There Will Come Soft Rains” is an excerpt from the novel The Martian Chronicles; in the novel humans abandon Earth and travel to Mars for various reasons, including nuclear war, as depicted in the story “…Soft Rains.” Humans will likely walk on Mars in the near future – but should we? Explain why humans should or should not go to Mars. Entry 2: o Read “The Veldt” or “The Murderer” by Ray Bradbury [Teacher will provide copy] ! What message did you receive from the author by reading either of these stories? Entry 3: o Class novel reading ! Write a response-to-literature entry on any aspect of the novel the class is currently reading together. Focus on a symbol. Label this entry with the Critical Thinking Question you used to establish your thesis statement. Entry 4 – Persuasive Writing: o PROMPT: Humans have often wondered if they were alone in the universe or if there is life on other planets. Is there extraterrestrial life out there in the universe? Be honest in your answer, and support your claim with logical evidence. Entry 5 - Communication: o Write one well-written paragraph to Mr. Sellarole regarding any aspect of your current life. The topic of this entry is your choice. The purpose is to simply keep a line of communication open. You may discuss, describe, question, share, complain, etc.… ***Dead Words: If your last journal had dead words, provide a synonym for each in your next journal. ***Questions and Requests: Mr. Sellarole will write questions and make requests while grading your journal. You are required to answer all questions and respond to all requests written in your next journal. ***Roots: Each entry (except ‘Communication’) must show use of at least one word derived from the Latin & Greek roots we are learning this year – use a highlighter to show each root. ***Elements of Literature: When responding to fiction/literature/poetry an Element of Literature must be referenced. .
