This Welcome booklet, which has been produced by the Parish Council in conjunction with Fishbourne Church, contains information on services available in the village and in the surrounding area. We hope you will find it useful. The Fishbourne Book (2006) details the recent history of the village. It is now out of print, but Copies are available on loan from Chichester Library. Though it has a history stretching back to Roman times, it developed as two separate communities. Old Fishbourne was part of Bosham Parish Council and New Fishbourne part of Chichester City Council until 1987. As a result there was no “Fishbourne voice” on important issues affecting the village. A village meeting summoned in 1969 by the then Rector led to the formation of Fishbourne Playing Field Association as a registered charity (1970), the opening of a Club House (1989), the establishment of a Neighbourhood Council (1975) and the first elected Parish Council (1987). The Parish Council was awarded Quality Parish Status in 2007 and the village won the Calor Best Village West Sussex Award in 2008. The Fishbourne Centre (2010) completes the vision of the 1970s pioneers. Village Voice, published quarterly by the Parish Council, is free and is delivered to all homes in the parish. It is edited by Ruth Keeley ([email protected]) The Parish Magazine can be purchased in church, at The Fishbourne Centre or at Fishbourne Primary School – or you can have it delivered for a subscription of £10 a year by arrangement with Hillary Young on 01243 785560. 3 FISHBOURNE PLAYING FIELD ASSOCIATION (FPFA) The Fishbourne Playing Field Association has grown steadily since its creation in 1969 and sporting facilities on the field now encompass tennis (4 courts), a bowling green, a croquet lawn and pitches for football and cricket. Netball is played on the multi- sport court and there is also a popular children’s play area. Two significant improvements will be lighting for the multi-sports court and the provision of changing rooms. Much of the maintenance of the Field falls to a very small number of hard- working volunteers, who would welcome an increase in their numbers! The Fishbourne Centre was opened in May 2010. Unlike the Club which served its members, the new Centre serves the needs of the whole community. It offers a main hall with a stage, a smaller hall with a bar which can be incorporated into the main hall, a meeting room and a licensed bar open in the evenings and from lunchtime at weekends. The Centre’s flexible design makes it an ideal venue for weddings and other family events. The Centre’s rapidly expanding programme already includes art classes, ballet, computer training, swing dance, jive, drama training (5 to 18 years), and an after-school club. It is home to many of the clubs and societies listed on page 7. Christians have worshipped on the site of Fishbourne Church for more than 750 years, and our aim today is to be a faith community, which provides a spiritual family base from which Christ will be proclaimed by word and example in the wider community. If you live in the parish, this church is yours. You do not need to attend the services in order to have your children baptised, your marriage celebrated, or your funeral held, although it’s lovely if you do. If you live outside of the parish but have close links with the church it may also be possible to have a service in the church, so please do not hesitate to ask for advice. We seek to give a warm welcome to all visitors and are open to new ideas. There is a variety of worship provided; some services reflect the Tradition of the Church by using The Book of Common Prayer, others are more informal encouraging the young, families, those on their own, and even those seeking some peace and quiet in their busy lives. All are welcome to any of the services, details of which can be found on the Church Notice Board, on the web site or in the monthly magazine. We hope to develop our work with the young, our pastoral outreach as well as our links with other groups in Fishbourne. As the progress towards having a new hall built, this and much more will become a reality in the not too distant future. Close links are maintained with the school and it is a delight to see so many children coming to services. We also aim to work with others in the community and continue building on such events as ‘Beer and Carols’ and ‘Hymns and Pimms’ services.
