Planned availability date January 26, 2007 IBM United States Announcement 207-001 IBM is a registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation 1 Description Version 5 of IBM 4690 Operating System adds the following enhancements including: • Help for enhanced data security – Complex Password Complex passwords enable retailers to strengthen controller security. Configurable rules determine how passwords are constructed and how often they are changed, which helps enable users to comply with Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security standards and other standards. – Forced sign-off This function will provide an API to allow retailers to write a background application to monitor keyboard and mouse input. If no input is received after a specified period of inactivity, it will force a sign-off. • More secure communications – IP network security IPSec, or IP security, helps provide more secure communications and helps protect the network with authorization and encryption at the packet level. V5 provides manual tunnel support of IPSec. – Secure Shell (SSH) This will provide the user with more security for remote logon, file transfer, and enable support for AES or DES3 encryption. -- Secure telnet This will offer the user the ability to start a more secure telnet session at the controller, encrypted by SSH. There will be two layers of logon; one for SSH, and one for the console. The new complex password function is a prerequisite. -- Secure FTP Both secure and non-secure FTP will be supported. In addition, the user can optionally secure FTP Activity Logging via the command line logging function previously added to the OS. The new complex password function is a prerequisite. • Controller to Controller Communications (CCC) over IP CCC over IP allows all of the 4690 native functions to continue to work as usual with the advantage of using the TCP/IP protocol. This allows for more complex network topologies, including the possibility of separating store controllers onto different networks. • Generic Terminal Configuration (GTC) usability The user can now display configuration of a range of terminals. • Daylight Savings Time This allows 4690 OS to support the change in duration for Daylight Savings Time for Java™ applications and VisualAge® C applications. • Dual Touch Display support on 4690 OS for Java applications • Option to disable write/verify This enhancement will offer potential hard disk performance improvements for newer disk drives based on SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) data. If SMART data capable, the user will be allowed to disable write/verify. • Increased serial buffer size and speed for C language only The maximum size for RS485 attached devices is increased to 1024. The new maximum speed is increased to 115,200 bps. • Remote Management Agent (RMA) systems management The RMA general agent will be packaged with the 4690 Controller. In V5, system events which go into the system log will be routed to the RMA General Agent. • Page Mode print The 4610 API will be extended to include page mode commands. This allows the application to construct complex images including text and graphics which can then can be printed at the 4610 printer receipt station.
