July 01, SITUATION REPORT 2010 Name of Disaster: River Erosion Locations: Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Sirajgonj and Bogra district of Bangladesh Date of Disaster: June 30, 2010 Situation Report No.187 Lalmonirhat At least 150 families at four villages of Sadar and Aditmari upazilas became homeless in the two days as erosion by the rivers Teesta and Dharla took an alarming turn in the areas. The two rivers continued erosion forcing the villagers to leave their homesteads for safer places. The affected villages are Kutirpar and Gobordhan in Aditmari upazila, Boalmari and Badaitari in Lalmonirhat Sadar, said administration sources. Kurigram Gaburjan, Majhipara and Modonchar villages of Ulipur and Rajibpur upazilas demolished in the two days as erosion by the river Brahmaputra took an alarming turn in the areas. The river continued erosion forcing the villagers to leave their homesteads for safer places. Continuous river erosion is now threatening by forwarding towards the Rajibpur flood protection embankment. Rangpur Around 200 families at twelve villages of Bodorgonj upazila became homeless in the two days as erosion by the river Jamuneshwari took an alarming turn in the areas. The homeless people are passing a miserable life under the open sky. The badly affected villages are lohanipara union: Mdhaikhaamr, Boirampur, Jelepara, Katchabari village; Modhupur union: Amrolbari, Tufanipara village; Bishnupur union: Bishnupur village; Kutubpur union: Shahebgonj, Hajipara, Katchabari village; Ramnathpur: Telipara village; and Kalupar union: Shonkorpur village. Gaibandha: In Gaibandha, the water in Bramaputra river marked sharp rise. The badly flood affected areas are Shaghata, Sadar and Sundorgonj upazila. River erosion took serious turn in 21 points in the affected areas. Sirajgonj Erosion by the Jamuan river took alrming turn at Kajipur upazila in Sirajgonj district. Bogra Houses and crop land of Sahriayakandi and Dhunot upazila in Bogra district has been seriously damaged by the Jamuna erosion in the last seven days. July 01, SITUATION REPORT 2010 A Short Snap of Damage Affected Areas Damage Lalmonirhat district At least 70 homesteads have been devoured by the Teesta at Kutirpar and Gobordhan villages in Aditmari upazila in the last two days due to river erosion. Around 80 homesteads of Boalmari and Badaitari villages have gone into the Dharla in the last two days due to river erosion. Many lands with standing crops especially maize have been eroded while approximately hundreds of acres of cultivable land, gardens, bamboo clusters have been eroded away by the river Dharla in the last 48 hours. Kurigram district At least 198 families at four villages of Ulipur and Rajibpur upazilas became homeless in the two days as erosion by the rivers. Kurigram upazila parishad and food store house under the threat of erosion. Rangpur district Around 200 families at twelve villages of Bodorgonj upazila became homeless. Jute, paddy seedlings and vegetables on vast areas were submerged by floodwater. A primary school is on the touch line of erosion. Sirajgonj district About 400 dwelling houses at Rajbari village went under river water in last twodays erosion. Bogra district At least 200 dwelling houses, a primary school and a madrasha at Karnibari village under Shariyakandi upazila destroyed by the Jamuna river eroasion in the last seven days.
