Foreword Dear Chess Friends 2007 was another sad year as the chess community lost a number of valued organisers and arbiters. It was just a year ago that I reported Roy Heppinstall was making a recovery and now as we all know mourn his passing. I am indebted to my colleagues on the committee of Hastings International Congress that the event his year will be dedicated to the many arbiters and organisers who have died in recent years. My particular thanks go to Stewart Reuben who managed to write such a nice tribute covering all of our dear departed chess friends, namely Tony Banks, Tony Bastable, John Bisson, Steve Boniface, Michael Brent, David Bronstein, David Brown, Keith Brown, Lord Callaghan, Lady Callaghan, Philip Church, Ian Cowen, Vernon Dilworth, Richard Furness, Isaac Iglesias, George Goodwin, Pete Harrison, Frank Hatto, Roy Heppinstall, Ted Johnson, Joyce Macdonald-Ross, Fred Manning, Ian Mason, Eric McCanlis, Kenneth Messere, Lady Milner-Barry, Michael O’Hara, Robert Pinner, John Robinson, Arie Rozenberg, David Pritchard, Walter Sebley, Peter Shaw, Jack Speigel, Simon Webb, Paul Watson, Roy Woodcock. October Council saw the elections with only one change, Chris Majer stood down as Director of Home Chess to be replaced by David Welch. I would like to take this opportunity to record a public thanks to Chris for his work over a number of years. I am pleased to advise that will not loose Chris completely as he was appointed Grading Manager. The John Robinson Trust continues to fund Junior Chess activity and a full report on the first year is available from the office. My thanks as ever to the dedicated staff who work through sickness and even cancel their holidays to assist the ECF. Gerry Walsh ECF President The year ended on a high with the Chess In Schools event in the House of Commons. Approximately 100 people attended. The even was attended by the Minister of Sport Gerry Suttcliffe, Solicitor General Vera Baird and MP’s Evan Harris, Michael Foster and Dennis Skinner. It has been a very busy year in the office with an even heavier work load than before, but as ever I have been admirably supported by the other staff Sophie, Gemma & Tina. I won’t list their job titles, because they are all multi- tasking, and we all cover and help each other. Thanks gang.
