About Manchester and Trafford Manchester is an exciting and vibrant city with a superb cultural and sporting heritage in addition to its historically important place in the industrial heritage of Great Britain. It forms the centre of a large multi-cultural and cosmopolitan conurbation in the North West of England. Manchester is easy to navigate thank to the comprehensive Metrolink tramway. Various districts deserve exploration and the centrally located Piccadilly Gardens is one such area. Directly to the west the Millennium Quarter is also quite special whilst to the North, the somewhat bohemian Northern Quarter is close is close to both Chinatown and Canal Street. ON the south- westerly side of the city if Castlefield and the energetic Deansgate Locks where waterfront restaurants are aplenty. Manchester has great links to several of Britain’s National Parks particularly Snowdonia, The Peak District and the Lake District. Manchester has a wealth of attractions, including Urbis – a stunning museum resembling a huge glass triangle; John Rylands Library – probably the city’s most beautiful building, featuring a breath taking reading room; Manchester Cathedral – standing proudly in the heart of the city with many parts dating back to the 15th Century. Manchester also has a number of cultural highlights. They include the Manchester Art Gallery with an impressive collection of paintings and sculptures; the Whitworth Art Gallery which recently had a £15 million redevelopment which has transformed the space and now incorporates the park next door; The Museum of Science and Industry – the city’s largest museum with many interactive displays; Manchester Museum – a city institution for more than a century with a mixture of natural history and social sciences; the Imperial War Museum – an aluminium clad showpiece with a large collection of military memorabilia; the Lowry – a dramatic glass and steel building containing around 300 original paintings and sketches by the city’s most believed artist, L. S . Lowry. Manchester offers arguably the best retail therapy outside London - The Trafford Centre is practically next door to Trafford General, so you can pop in after a hard day’s work! This part of the northwest is home to many famous and well established sporting clubs and teams, such as Manchester United and Manchester City, Sale Sharks RUFC, Salford Reds RLFC and Manchester Storm Ice Hockey Team as well as the home of British Cycling and the Sky Professional Cycling Team at the Manchester Velodrome. Manchester International Airport is approximately 15 – 20 minute drive from both Trafford General and the Central Site About Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust MFT is a large teaching hospital trust, which incorporates eight hospitals on five sites. Manchester Royal Infirmary, The Royal Manchester Eye Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital for Women and The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital all occupy the Central site. The Dental Hospital is located near to the Central Site within the University precinct and Trafford General is found to the south west near Urmston, Trafford General Hospital also provides services at Altrincham General and Stretford Memorial Hospitals. Wythenshawe Hospital is based to the South of the city and includes Withington Community Hospital. In addition to MFT, Greater Manchester West Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust at Trafford General Hospital provides placements in mental health and Manchester Mental Health and Social Care NHS Trust provide mental health placements. The Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides F2 posts to some of our foundation tracks. Trafford Hospital is recognised nationwide as the birthplace of the NHS when Park Hospital as it was then known was opened by the then Secretary of State for Health, Aneurin Bevan in 1948. Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) was formed in 1752. It had 12 beds and began in a small house in the city centre. It is now a large teaching hospital for University of Manchester's Medical School, and a specialist regional centre for kidney and pancreas transplants, haematology and sickle cell disease. Our Heart Centre is a major provider of cardiac services in the region, specialising in cardiothoracic surgery and cardiology. There are specialist surgical services for Hepatopancreaticobiliary surgery, vascular surgery and upper GI surgery. The Emergency Department sees around 110 000 patients each year making it one of the busiest departments in England. Saint Mary's Hospital was founded in 1790 and, over the years, has successfully developed a wide range of world class medical services for women, babies and children as well as a comprehensive Genetics Centre and an internationally recognised teaching and research portfolio. There are over 9 000 births annually. The Manchester Royal Eye Hospital provides secondary and tertiary care to residents of Greater Manchester and beyond. The Division provides an extensive range of services and facilities for both adults and children. These include the Emergency Eye Centre, Acute Referral Centre, Ophthalmic Imaging, Ultrasound Unit, Electrodiagnosis, Laser Unit, Optometry, Orthoptics, the state-of-the-art Manchester Eye Bank and Ocular Prosthetics. The Royal Manchester Children's Hospital provides specialist healthcare services for children and young people throughout the North West, as well as nationally and internationally. The hospital sees 185,000 patients’ visits each year across a range of specialties including oncology, haematology, bone marrow transplant, burns, genetics, and orthopaedics. There is a separate children’s Emergency Department. Wythenshawe Hospital is a major acute teaching hospital. It is recognised as a centre of clinical excellence and providing district general hospital services and specialist tertiary services to our local community. Fields of specialist expertise include cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, respiratory conditions, burns and plastics, cancer and breast care services. The Christie is not part of Manchester Foundation Trust but provides several F2 placements for our programme.
