A Catalogue of the Right Honourable Charles Earle of Carlisle’s Books In His Lordships Library at Castle Howard Taken in February 1715/1716 transcribed and edited by David Griffiths Yorkshire Country Houses Partnership Libraries Project University of York Library & Archives October 2004 This catalogue has been compiled from the information transcribed from a manuscript in Castle Howard archives, shelfmark H2/3/1, which appears in the two columns below marked ‘Shelfmark’ and ‘MS Entry’ respectively. The manuscript has an introductory note that reads as follows: An explanation of the Letters and Directions how to find any book in this Catalogue as followeth C Signifies the Classis which is mark’d att top with Gold Letters A B C &c: Reckoning them from the Left Hand to the right. D Signifies the Division, Partition or shelf directly down under the Gold Letters on the Top N Signifies the Number of the Books in Each shelf according to the figure mark’d on the back In this transcription of the catalogue, the ‘Classis’ is the first of the two letters in the shelfmark following the 1716 date; the ‘Division, Partition or shelf’ is the second; and the ‘Number’ is the Arabic numeral, preceded by a ‘0’ in many instances to allow for computer sorting. Of the letters comprising the ‘Classis’, the letters D, F, and G were not used; and neither was the letter J which at this time would have been considered another form of the letter I. The arrangement on the shelves would seem to have been a mixture of the systematic and the pragmatic, in that there are arrangements by subject, e.g., BE (history, topography, and travel), EC (theology), and EE (history); and by size, e.g., BF, EF, KE, LE, ME would probably have been bottom shelves containing, as they did, folio size volumes. It is not known where in the house the books were located nor the furnishings in which they were kept. All but eight of the titles in the manuscript list have been identified, although I realise that some of the identifications which I have made may possibly be in error. Books which have a comment ‘Pressmark of the third Earl of Carlisle’ or a mark of ownership of Sir William Fenwicke are currently housed in the library at Castle Howard.
