Chaisson DIRECTOR OF Lee “Buddy” Amedee TRADE DEVELOPMENT WWW.PORTSL.COM | WINTER 2014 33 DIRECTOR’S LOG f all cargo trends remain the same, it looks like the Port of South Louisiana is gear- ing up for a record-breaking Iyear, surpassing the 278 million short tons handled by the facilities in our jurisdiction in 2012. Year-to- date data (first through third quar- ter) shows a 13 percent increase in throughput from that in 2013, pri- marily due to an upsurge in grain, crude oil, chemicals and fertilizers, steel and general cargo movement. D. Paul Robichaux Joseph Scontrino PRESIDENT EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT Globalplex Intermodal Terminal has seen its fair share of activity this year. For instance, there was a 901 percent increase in cargo shipments thus far. The tonnage handled in the first three quarters of this year has already exceeded the yearly totals of past years, especially for cargos such as chemicals and fertilizers, coal, lignite and coke and general cargo. The Finger Pier became fully operational this year, allowing simultaneous berthing of two vessels (one at the general cargo dock and one at the finger pier) on the outboard side and mooring of barges on the inboard side, thus expediting cargo transfer. Infrastructure modifications and upgrades are also taking place at Globalplex. For instance, the warehouse and conveyor and belt system at the Globalplex bulk cargo area is undergoing a $4 million upgrade. Furthermore, damages to Building No. 71 caused by Hurricane Isaac are in the P. Joey Murray Stanley Bazile TREASURER SECRETARY process of being repaired. Within the Globalplex general cargo area, a new retrofit metal roof is being installed on Building No. 76, most of which is occupied by Evonik. The remainder of the building, which houses Port of South Louisiana personnel, will undergo an interior facelift. Also, the installation of state-of-the-art, automated truck scales, paid for by Globalplex’s terminal operator Associated Terminals, is in its final stages toward completion. During the summer, Cross Road Centers became Globalplex’s newest tenant when it leased the former Pepsi facility. Barton Mines’ activity at Building No. 19 has flourished to the point of needing a larger installation. Currently, the proposed $13 million expansion is in the design and engineering stages. We have several prospects interested in leasing the Port’s property for future projects. In short, we are grateful for our achievements in 2014. Our resolution for 2015, as it is every year, is to continue to improve, upgrade and build a new to accommodate the needs of our ten- Louis Joseph Robert “Poncho” Roussel ants and customers.
