German Soccer Squad, World Cup (2010) Abstract This photo shows the German national soccer team which competed at the FIFA tournament in South Africa in 2010. Almost half of the players had grown up in Germany as children of migrants, including Mesut Özil, who was born and raised as the son of Turkish migrants in the West German town of Gelsenkirchen, Jérôme Boateng, who was born and raised in Berlin as the son of a German mother and Ghanain father, and Sami Khedira, who was born and raised in Stuttgart as the son of a Tunisian father and German mother. The team served as a reflection of and inspiration for the power of diversity in German society, channeled through professional soccer. The group picture was taken on June 2, 2010.
