John Mclaughlin Will Perform

John McLaughlin will perform October 10, 1977 Guitarist John McLaughlin, formerly of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and now the leader of Shakti, will present what McLaughlin calls the "Bombay Boogie," an evening of new sounds fusing the elements of classical jazz, rock and the rhythmic structures of Indian music at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, in the Main Gym at the University of California, San Diego. McLaughlin, born in England and the son of a classical violinist, was steeped in the recorded inspiration of Muddy Waters and other American blues and jazz artists. He started his career jamming in British pubs and in 1969 began to explore a different kind of experimental music. He was invited by drummer Tony Williams to join Lifetime. Through Williams, McLaughlin met Miles Davis and broke new jazz ground with such recordings as "Bitches Brew." In mid-1972, McLaughlin formed the Mahavishnu Orchestra and, through his studies of the teachings of Sri Chinmoy, he met and began to work with spiritual brother Carlos Santana. A second Mahavishnu Orchestra was formed in 1974. Shakti, McLaughlin's new group, consists of Indian musicians Zakir Hussain on tabla, T. H. Vinayakram on the Ghatam or claypot and L. Shankar, violinist and co-author of most of the band's compositions. Shakti means "creative intelligence, creative beauty, creative power." The group has made one live concert recording. Tickets for Shakti's UC San Diego appearance, under the auspices of the University Events Office, are $3.50 for UC San Diego students and $4.50 for general public and may be purchased at the UCSD box office (452-4559) and at Ticketron outlets.
