Itineraries - Lôn Las Cefni Grid Reference: SH 422 656 – SH 430 770 – SH 451 782 Lôn Las Cefni Cycleway ~ All day or more A 14 mile off-road cycleway/footpath traversing beautiful countryside from Llyn Cefni and the Dingle woodland Nature Reserve, through Malltraeth Marsh RSPB wetland reserve, past Malltraeth Estuary and then through Newborough Forest. The cycleway can be entered at several points: Llyn Cefni Two free car parks at either end of the lake with picnic tables. Circular walk around the lake 3.5 miles. Cycle path linking the two car parks along the south side but not complete along the north 2 miles. The cycle path links south to the Dingle Nature Reserve, Llangefni and beyond. Views across the lake. Excellent for wildfowl especially in the winter. Dingle Woodland Nature Reserve Two large pay and display car parks. A mile of woodland walks along the banks of the Afon Cefni. Woodland and river birds. The cyclepath traverses the centre of Llangefni, Anglesey’s County Town. Malltraeth Marsh From the lower end of the Bryn Cefni Industrial Estate, the cyclepath follows the banks of the Afon Cefni for some 5.5 miles to Malltraeth. The path passes underneath the A55 dual carriageway and across the old A5. For the most part, the route sits on the raised floodbanks of the canalised Afon Cefni. It affords fine views across the marsh, with an especially interesting section being the 2 miles south west from the A5 overlooking the RSPB’s large reedbed and wetland reserve. The flat, former estuary is an unusual landscape feature in this part of the country. There are former coal workings at Pentre Berw. Malltraeth village and estuary There is a small car park in the village by the end of the Cob. From the village, Malltraeth Cob crosses the upper end of the estuary. There are fine views down the estuary, which supports large numbers of wildfowl and wading birds at all times of the year. Views on the inland side of the Cob pan across the ‘Cob Lake’ where the world renowned bird artist, Charles Tunnicliffe, painted many of his subjects. Refreshments are available in Malltraeth village. Newborough Forest Across the Cob, the cycle route enters the forest at a large free car park. From here there are several paths entering the forest, but the main path is the continuation of Lôn Las Cefni which follows the road for 100m before turning into the heart of the forest. The forest is more attractive than many conifer plantations, comprising mostly maturing Corsican pine, in which there is abundant bird life and red squirrels. There are miles of walking in the forest, though Lôn Las Cefni remains clearly signposted. Llanddwyn Beach The official route of Lôn Las Cefni passes through the north east of the forest and then meets the main forest track, which it follows out of the forest to Newborough village. However, from where they meet, the main track can also be followed south west to the main forest car park (parking charge payable) just behind the beach. Llanddwyn has a huge sandy beach, over 5 miles in length, with fine views across Caernarfon Bay to Snowdonia and the Lleyn Peninsula. Newborough Dunes An interesting alternative to the forest is to walk across Newborough’s massive dune system to the south. At Pen Lôn roundabout, 0.5 miles south of Newborough village, there are two car parks with very extensive footpaths around and across the dune system. .
