GOVERNMENT OF INDIA ENVIRONMENT, FORESTS AND CLIMATE CHANGE LOK SABHA UNSTARRED QUESTION NO:4481 ANSWERED ON:21.04.2015 TIGER RESERVES Gopalakrishnan Shri R.;Kaushik Shri Ramesh Chander Will the Minister of ENVIRONMENT, FORESTS AND CLIMATE CHANGE be pleased to state: (a) whether the Government proposes to set up new tiger reserves in the country and if so, the details thereof, location and State/UT- wise; (b) the steps being taken by the Government to increase the Asian tiger population; (c) whether the Government has any plan to transfer Asian tigers from the Gir National Park to any other reserve; and (d) if so, the time by which the said plan is likely to be implemented? Answer MINISTER OF STATE (INDEPENDENT CHARGE) FOR ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE (SHRI PRAKASH JAVADEKAR) (a) The National Tiger Conservation Authority has accorded final approval to Kudremukh National Park (Karnataka) and Rajaji National Park (Uttarakhand) for declaring as tiger reserves by respective States. Also, in-principle approval has been accorded by the National Tiger Conservation Authority for creation of three new tiger reserves: (i) Ratapani (Madhya Pradesh), (ii) Sunabeda (Odisha) and (iii) Guru Ghasidas (Chhattisgarh). Further, the State Governments have been advised to send proposals for declaring the following areas as tiger reserves: (i) Suhelwa (Uttar Pradesh), (ii) Mhadei (Goa), (iii) Srivilliputhur Grizzled Giant Squirrel / Megamalai Wildlife Sanctuaries / Varushanadu Valley (Tamil Nadu), (iv) Dibang (Arunachal Pradesh) and (v) Cauveri-MM Hills (Karnataka). (b) Several milestone initiatives have been taken by the Government of India for conservation and protection of tigers and other wild animals in the country, and the same is at Annexure-I. (c) & (d) There is no species called Asian tigers in Gir National Park in particular and in India in General. Hence, question of any plan to transfer such species from the Gir National Park to any other reserve does not arise. .
