I’ve explored many Dutch and Flemish masterworks in classes that I teach at Columbia University. I am excited to share the experience of seeing these extraordinary paintings, sculptures, and altarpieces in churches and museums throughout Holland and Belgium, encountering timeless classics on their native soil. This trip offers us a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: We will be among the first to behold Jan van Eyck’s partially restored Ghent Altarpiece (The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb) in its original home, Saint Bavo’s Cathedral. Step ashore and continue to Antwerp, a city renowned for its medieval and modern architecture and impressive art collections. Following lunch, see the cathedral where Rubens’ famous Descent from the Cross is on display, and discover the Red Star Line Museum to learn the stories of the emigrants migrating to America between 1873 and 1935.
