MARLTON PIKE (Suite 505) • CHERRY HILL NEW JERSEY 08034 • (609) 428-8648 • FM1:113 ALBUM REPORT September 18, 1981 BILL HARD, Editor Hard Choiceil MARTIN BRILEY, 'FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN' , kOL F Last week I gave the Briley a solid Red Page shot in Significant Songs, and since that time this fabulous debut has refused to budge from my home turntable and car cassette, so this week we upgrade it to full pick status. I think the man's not it all—incredibly intelligent lyrics, a first rate feel for hooks, and an amazingly low burn quotient. -Take it from VYSP's Dick Hungate, "It's one of those albums that gets into your blood (in a positive sense) and spreads like a virus...From Tom Starr, WOUR, "It's our cinch to clinch this week. I played 'Man I Feel' the other day as a mystery artist, and as I suspected, it triggered a deluge of calls. Listeners convinced it was the new Genesis"...Dave Krusenklaus, "Among the records I listened to this week, I was most impressed with Martin's. -1- Tove the whole first side, and the songs and hooks are there"...Judy McNutt, KGB-FM, 'Love the Briley. Listeners think it's Genesis".. .And from Ray White, WLIP, "I'm having trouble putting Martin Briley into a category, but it doesn't really matter. He's good and that's enough'...Start with "Man I Feel", then consider "Milkshake" and "I Don't Feel Better". Easy Choice JOHN ENTWISTLE, "TOO LATE THE HERO", ATCO It's not really a first listen item, but with a lineup like Entwistle, Walsh and Vitale, who's gonna wait more than a New York minute to put it on the air? Now it's just a question of cuts-- and in order, we recommend "Talk Dirty", ''Fallen Angel", and "Sleeping Man". Chain Reaction REACTION RECORDS: BILLY JOEL, "SONGS IN THE ATTIC", COLUMBIA #1 Most Added by a comfortable margiii, and with the active singles play on "Broadway" (84-56), this live set could well he around awhile... Comments: Joe Bonadonna, WMMR, "Billy is a natural for Philadelphia. Hearing the live versions of 'Say Goodbye To Hollywood' and 'Captain Jack', captures the feeling of BJ in concert. He's an incredibl e performer''...Stew Schantz, WPDH, "I'm so glad Billy has included earlier material on the live album. It should serve to expose those who have never heard of Joel prior to 'The Stranger' to some of his earlier stuff"...Bill Simmons, WMYK, "I'll play a live version of 'Captain Jack' anytime"...Bobbin Beam, WLPX, "'Hollywood' was recorded here in Milwaukee, so that was a natural for us to add, hut I've always loved tos Angelenos' and the execution of 'Captain Jack' refreshes my ears to Billy Joel songs aoain"...Bob Bittens WHCN, "The live Lp is a very pleasant surprise. Thank God he didn't choose to simply do live clone versions of hit singles"...And from George Bradt, WBRU, "'Attic' proves that Billy's energy, -- credibility and honesty are still intact." I like tfe un builr_k to a nice upbeat positive climax--an easy toe-tapper." GENEçI'T () REPLY AT ALL", ATLANTIC Phil (,(,11in -, and the EWF horns '5-d the way, and now only bozos hesitate. Our k2 Most Added single with 53 reports.. .Comments: Ron Rizzi, WRNW, "I don't know how Phil Collins managed to get the guys in the band to go along with th -nr horn section, but it all adds a new dimension and and diversificat - )n to the quality music that Genesis makes"...Michele Robinson, KLOL, "My absolute favorite -.ono of the week. I think the teaming of Genesis and rwF is the best thing to happen to rock and roll in years"...Rob Roman, KLAQ, "After the success of face value, it's obvious that his influence was -,trong with— Ginesis as well. 'No Reply At All' has both the sparks and the punch of 'I Again'. There should be no problem with crossover here". DONNIE IRIS, "KING COOL", MCA A great week for Donnie—another 14 reports for #3 Most Added, and an Index underline 44-29 for second strongest mover--up 36-24..."Merilee" is still the leader (at e61), but "Love Is Like A Rock' is looking better all the time--as noted by WWCK's Mark Miller, "Every now and then I get a feel for a track that's gonna be a monster hit. KARLA DEVITO, "IS THIS A COOL WORLD OR WHAT?'', EPIC Our #4 Most Added--with 11 reports. The title track and "Midnight Confession" are the early leaders. I also recommend "I Can't Stand To Reminisce"...KZOK's Craig Martin sez, "It's my favorite new album of the week. This record is an absolute delight. It brines back some memnries of some of the great Girl group albums of the 60's. It may take some time to catch on, but album radio should find a place for Karla in its own cold world of tight playlists"...Marc Miller, WBCN, "Check out this killer Lp, esp, the remake of 'Midnight Confession'"...And from Kid Leo, WMMS, "Is she a cool chick or what? Certainly the association with Meat Loaf can't hurt Te-Ven though it has ended). A fine addition to the femme fatales of rock and roll" KIX, ATLANTIC We log in 13 reports for *4 Most Added, and quality-a-plenty: WEBN, WS, KLOL, WCOZ, KSJO, WMET, and WLUP...At the rate the heavies are rolling in, we should see a debut on the Metro chart next week..."The Itch" is the key cut. From the Kid, "Kix is a prime example of the new heavy metal. The old metal of the early 70's carried on at a drone pace and had lyrics about evil, magic, and drugs. The new heavy metal,of which AC/DC is certainly the prime purveyor, carries on at a break- neck pace, has lyrics about fun, booze, and broads. My, how we have grown!!"...Art Phillips, KILO, "Kix just keep getting harder to find. 'The Itch' is solid, and can't miss on the airwaves"... Dane Venable, WRAS, "Only one record to talk about, Kix kicks ass.
