The Netball Quad Series and Constellation Cup are the first part of the journey for the squad as they look ahead toward a top performance at the Netball World Cup in Liverpool next year. Netball New Zealand extends a warm welcome to the Australian Diamonds, England Roses and South Africa SPAR Proteas who always provide a fantastic spectacle and fierce challenge in the true spirit of the game. The sport of Netball in this country continues to create positive, strong and healthy role models at all levels from grassroots right through to on the world stage. Legacy plays a huge role for the Silver Ferns with our young talent aspiring to wear the black dress and be the next Maria Folau, Samantha Sinclair. Earlier generations have enjoyed the thrill of watching the likes of Dame Lois Muir, Sandra Edge and Irene van Dyk in action. As the Silver Ferns prepare to open a new chapter in that legacy, we look forward to all Netball fans joining us on the journey. One person doesn’t make a team, but a nation can. ABOUT THE LOGO Fashioned to include a majestic bird featuring the colours of SANZEA’S inaugural four nations, it is a symbol of beauty, flight, power, strength, precision, and movement with grace and breadth (wing span), wisdom and experience (all seeing). Named Victorious, she takes her influence from an eagle - a recognised symbol of vision, leadership and strength. The association with a bird of prey of such power and dominance, beauty and grace; the sleek lines represent Victorious’ intelligence, ability to soar and keen sight. She is seen as a visionary who is willing to push the limits of self and team and is summoned when about to embark on a challenge – the challenge of the Netball Quad Series. HOW THE TROPHY IS DECIDED All matches must play to an outright result. Win: 2 points Draw: 1 point* Loss: 0 points *only if match is unable to be completed If teams are tied on points at the end of the Series, the winner is decided by the greater goal percentage (calculated to two decimal places). Goal % = total goals scored / total goals scored against x 100 If the teams are still tied, then goal difference will decide their ranking. Goal difference = goals for – goals against (from all matches played) After goal difference, the highest number of goals scored for will determine the winner of the Netball Quad Series. In the event that both teams scored an equal number of goals, the series will be declared a draw. Appointed new coach just last week and with a new-look team, there is much anticipation surrounding Noeline Taurua’s entry at international level and with it reviving the Silver Ferns flagging fortunes. “We’ve got to start from somewhere and it just happens to be that our first game’s against England which, personally, I am absolutely excited by. They’re Commonwealth Games gold medallists, so what an amazing way to start our campaign, against the best.” Taurua said. “This is our opportunity to put out a better performance than our last showing which was the Common- wealth Games. We’re only as good as our last outing, so we need to perform and we need to be better than what that was.” An experienced England pipped favourites Australia to win their first Commonwealth Games title while the Silver Ferns were consigned to a fourth-place finish during the tournament in April. The hugely respected and popular Taurua has had to hit the ground running, only formally getting together with her team for the first time earlier this week and formulating her plans for the international season ahead. “It’s all pretty full-on but we’re getting through it. We’re not going to save the world by Saturday but we’ll give it a good crack. “The time frame is very limited but we have made a start and so far, the intention has been really good. I’m really happy with where the team is mentally and I’m very happy with the mix of players that we have. The players are working very, very hard both on and off court so I couldn’t be happier.” For the Netball Quad Series and the Constellation Cup to follow, Taurua’s objectives are to provide oppor- tunities for everybody to get out on court. “We’ve got to be able to test and assess players in real time,” she said. “We do have a game plan for Saturday and firstly, we’ve got to get the understanding of what those strategies are. So, we’re starting not necessarily at ground zero but we’re building a base. By the time we play NZA on Thursday, we will have a good gauge. “We’re also looking at our protocols, our routines and practises off-court, so making sure they’re effec- tive and efficient.” While the other participants in the series, England Roses, the Australian Diamonds and SPAR Proteas also haven’t played since the Commonwealth Games, it is a slightly different scenario for the Silver Ferns with a new coach at the helm.
