The enumeration for the 1991 census was conducted between 9th February and 28th February 1991 and revisional round from 1 st to 5th March 1991. The sunrise of t st March 199 t was the reference date for the 1991 census. Provisional results giving the population by sex and literates up to the district level were released on 27th March, 1991 as Paper 1 of 1991. A Supplement giving the rural/urban break-up of the population and a broad picture of workers up to Tahasil and Town level was published on 3rd December, 199 t. The final figures along with the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes population up to C.D. Block and Town level was released in 1992. The General Population Tables of 1991 census which give basic data such as area, population etc. of the State and the Districts are published in two parts i.e. Part II-A containing A-Series Tables and Part 11-8 containing Primary Census Abstract. Part 11-8 has been published in two volumes, Part 11-8(i) presents the Primary Census Abstract for the General Population and Part II-Beii) presents the Primary Census Abstract for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. These tables are prepared manually based on full count. The present volume Part II-A contains the General Population Tables A- t to A-5. The data are presented at the State/District/TahasillPolice Station/Part Police Station/Urban Agglomera­ tion and Town level. A background note on 1991' census and an analytical note have been incorporated under genera! note to provide necessary orientation and knowledge to the data users. I, with gratitute, acknowledge the co-operation of the Government of Orissa and the Heads of the Departments and their staff inctuding the people of Orissa for making t 99 t census a success. My special than~s are due to all Supervisors and Enumerators who were engaged during 1991 census to make it a success. My heartfelt thanks also due to all the Principal Census Officers, District Census Officers, Sub-Divisional Census Officers, Charge Officers, Town Census Officers, Additional Charge Officers and Sub-Charge Officers who played a pivotal role to complete the census as per prescribed time schedule. Senapati, under whose able guidance the entire Census Operations was carried out deserves all credit for successful conduct of t 991 census in the State of Orissa.
