Revised December 2020 Of Redeeming Social Importance: A Bibliography In 1957, in Roth v. United States, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that even pornography came under first amendment protection—if the publication also contained material "of redeeming social importance." It took more court cases to figure out exactly what that meant. To avoid trouble with the post office, some editors of American nudist magazines in the 1960s made sure they included one scholarly (or pseudo-scholarly) article in each issue. Nude art was the favorite topic. If the author had a Ph.D., that fact was displayed prominently. By 1970, most nudist editors decided the precaution was no longer necessary, and scholarly articles appeared only randomly after then. This list compiles all such scholarly articles found in 1960s English-language magazines at the American Nudist Research Library. To it have been added earlier articles from old card catalogues, and more recent bibliography on similar topics that was compiled by the Professors & Researchers Special Interest Group of The Naturist Society. They are listed by culture or period. Be aware that some nudist magazines numbered themselves two ways: a cumulative issue number on the front cover and/or the traditional volume and number on page 2.
