Culture Assignment • Use pages 86-97 to study each cultural trait. What country did the majority of your products come from? 2. What characteristics does that country have that would allow them to produce a large amount of products for trade? (consider things like: Population / Land Size / Location / Climate / Government) 3. What methods of transportation would be used to move those products from their original location? 4. Were you surprised by where any or the majority of your products came from? Why or why not? 5. What does this tell you about how connected the world is? In other words, why doesn’t everyone just spread out evenly? Population and Movement vocabulary • Population Distribution: How the population of a place is spread out. • Why not spread things out evenly? • Near natural resources • Near food supplies • Near job • Inhabitable land • Climate • Cultural groups Population Density • Population Density: Measure of a number of people per square mile in a country (put this definition in your binder) – You take the total square miles of a place and divide by the number of people- it does NOT mean that the people are spread out evenly across those square miles – Think back to population distribution- which one tells us more about the characteristics of a place? Why do you think so? Population and movement vocabulary- label in vocab • Urbanization: movement of people from rural areas (farms and countryside) to cities • Emigrant: Person who moves from their native country to another voluntarily • Immigrant: Person moving into a new country • So, if I move from the U.S. to Djibouti, I am a U.S. emigrant. (moved FROM my native country) and a Djibouti immigrant Refugees • Refugees: People flee to escape violence, persecution, famine, disaster- seeking safety- (write this definition in your binder) • Famine- little or no food • Asia hosts 50% of world refugee pop. • Europe and Africa just over 20% Refugee Journal 1. What are some events either in history or currently that have created refugees? 2. What are at least 3 hardships you can think of that refugees would face? 3. What are at least 3 problems that refugees would create in the countries in which they are relocated?
