CROWLEY CLAN NEWSLETTER March 2015 compiled by Marian Crowley Chamberlain Page 1 of 8 Announcing The Companionate of Clann Ui Chruadhlaoich We are announcing the launch of the Companionate of the Clan. The Companionate of Clann Ui Chruadhlaoich is an honour bestowed on clansmen and non clansmen who have demonstrated exceptional and continued support to the traditional Brehon and Gaelic culture of Ireland through their contribution to the life of Clann Ui Chruadhlaoich, protecting, enriching and promoting its patrimony. Many clans and Gaelic Houses have formed their respective Companionate, just to name a few: O'Cahan, O'Neil Clanaboy, O'Carroll, and O'Connor. As independent private organisations it is the prerogative of Irish clans and Gaelic houses to form such companionate. Foundation of the Companionate It is an integral part of and within the community of Clann Ui Chruadhlaoich. It is endorsed and supported by the Clan Council or Derbhfine, who will propose nominees to the Companionate. The Companionate is not a knighthood, nor does it claim to any historical continuity, and it bears no relationship to any existing or past order of knighthood. It is a recognition which is granted by a private organization, our clan, Clann Ui Chrudadhlaoich. The design of the Companionate Badge is the property of the clan through the Clan Council and shall never be reproduced other than by the Council itself. Governance The Companionate shall be headed by a Chancellery composed of a Chancellor and two Vice Chancellors. The Chancellor and the two Vice Chancellors shall be elected for a term of three years, renewable, by the Clan Council. They shall themselves be member of the Clan Council. The Taoiseach and Tanaiste shall not be a member of the Companionate Chancellery other than for the exception years 2015 and 2016. The Chancellery shall be responsible to make the grants and maintain a public roll of members of the companionate. All former Taoiseach and recognized sept Chieftains (na Madery, O'Crowley Og, Mac Y Vallirity of the Monteen, O'Crowley MacFyneen, Kippagh, Baccach,) are eligible to be automatically granted the Companionate. The companionate shall be limited to 25 companions maximum Grant of the Companionate The grant certificate of the Companionate shall confirm the right of the recipient to wear as he/she sees fit the badge of the Companionate as a neck badge, a medal, or a sewed badge on a blazer. A companion may use the postnominals "U.C" The nominations from the Clan Council or Derbhfine will occur every two years and will be submitted to the Companionate Chancellery and discussed for final approval by Saint Patrick's Day every two years starting in 2016. The companion will also be eligible to a grant of coat of arms. We began publishing after the Clan Gathering that took place in Dunmanway in September 1995. I remember when Tom Crowley phoned me to tell me about that gathering, I thought I'd better make the trip since I might not be able to go in later years. That was seven gatherings ago, and I made all except the one in 2001. Hope to be there in 2016 and long into the future. Plans are proceeding for the 2016 Crowley Clan Gathering which will take place in Bantry from September 9th to September 11th. Details can be found in the fall 2014 Crowley Clan Newsletter. The primary venue will be the Maritime Hotel. You can reserve a room for the weekend by phoning 353-27- 54700. Tell them you are with the Crowley Clan. In this issue, we have two articles from our current Taoiseach Michael-Patrick Crowley of Paris, France. The first is an announcement of a new honor which our clan will begin bestowing in 2016. It is called The Companionate of Clann Ui Chruadhlaoich. In the second article, Michael gives a brief history of his own part of the Crowley Clan. He is able to trace his family back for 300 years!! This is an inspiration for those of us you would like to trace our families back for half that long. As always, we have Crowley news from around the world, including, submissions from Australia, Canada, and the USA. We love hearing from Crowleys no matter where in the world you live. White, Green Valley, AZ, USA: My great great great grandparents were Jeremiah Crowley (born 1770 and died 1797 in Ireland), and Catherine Leary. My great great grandparents were Daniel Crowley (born 1825 in Bandon, Ireland and died 1880 in Bantry, Ireland) and Catherine Connelly (born 1829 and died 1900 in Ireland. My great grandparents were Daniel Crowley (born 2 Jul 1851 in County Cork, Ireland and died 30 Aug 1905) and Ellen Flaherty (born 17 Mar 1856 in Galway, Ireland and died 1 Dec 1910). They were married on 23 May 1880 in Holy Cross Church, Cincinnati, Ohio. Their children were Ellen (Nell) Crowley Morton (born 1881 and died 1916), Anna G. Crowley Carrigan (born 1883 and died 1955), John Crowley (born 1885 and died 1907), Bridget Agnes (Delia) Montgomery (born 25 Jun 1889 and died 25 Oct 1954). Bridget was my grandmother. Their religion was Catholic. Daniel and Ellen are buried in St. Jospeh Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio. Sunny Crowley, Vacaville, CA, USA ([email protected]): My eldest daughter, Maggi Iris Rose Crowley was married to Tosh Viernez on 12/13/14 at 1500 hours, 16 minutes, and 17 seconds! The wedding was on the beach in Lahaina Maui, where Tosh was born. Maggi was born in Haiku, Maui. They have been together for 11 years, and chuckle at the number line-up on their special day! Tosh races 3 wheelers on Maui for fun, and his race # is 17! Maggi made her hand bouquet using hand- me-down jewelry pieces from her grandma Sue Crowley, and me. We added flowers. It was very beautiful and unusual. If you are ever on Maui, please drop in to Rock & Brew in Paia. Maggi is the daytime bartender, I think during the week. She loves to meet Crowley's from around the world. Tell her Aloha from her mom, Sunny! Thomas Crowley, Ohio/Arizona, USA ([email protected]): After three attempts, we finally have copies of the video of the 2013 Crowley Clan Gathering that are compatible with North American DVD standards. James Crowley provided me with addresses for those in North America who ordered them, and I have mailed the 23 DVDs (which Liam Crowley had sent to me in bulk) on January 23rd. Liam is handling the distribution in Europe and all other countries. Anyone who paid for and does not receive a DVD should contact me or Liam ([email protected]). Once again, we apologize for the long delay. Suz Crowley-Riddle, Australia ([email protected]): I am the great granddaughter of James David CROWLEY whose parents were David CROWLY and Catherine MEGHAN believed to have lived in Kilbrittain, Ireland. James (born in 1843) emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on "Southern Cross" departing Plymouth England and arriving in Australia in Page 4 of 8 January 1868, a labourer, aged 26 years. On the same ship was John Crowley (don't know if he was a relative); he also was from Ireland, 23 years of age and a blacksmith. No relatives in Australia can give any information on James, only that he threatened to kill his wife if she didn't leave. He offered her 50 pounds to leave so he could bring another woman to live with him. Also, his wife told a judge that James expected his children to fend for themselves from 10 years of age. She called James a lunatic in Court. Our family has tried for over 40 years to find info on James's parents and siblings. Relatives have been to Ireland, but they come back with nothing. Some say we are related to Daniel and James CROWLEY (brothers), supposedly born in Timoleague, who emigrated from Bandon Ireland in the 1860's. Their parents were David CROWLEY and Honnoria DEASY. If anyone has any information, I would be eternally grateful. John Gorski, Chicago, IL, USA ([email protected]): I continue to work on my Crowley Genealogy. My mother is the Crowley. I have a cousin, Michael Crowley, who has just submitted his DNA to the Crowley project and we hope that will help with our research and the research of other Crowley's. My Crowleys trace back to Lismore, County Waterford. Through the Waterford Heritage Group in Waterford City, we have obtained birth/baptismal records of our branch dating back to 1824.
