The selections now comprise this Supplementary Books List for pre-kindergarten through grade six. The books are authorized for purchase for schools on their requisitions and charged against their supplementary books allotment in the budget. A committee. reconstituted each year, but continuing from year to year with a majority of the same personnel, has conducted this appraisal. For the school year 1973-74 the committee was composed of the persons listed by sub-committee on the following pages. The sub-committees, covering all fields, examine the books suggested by teachers, principals, and supervisors, as well as those submitted by publishers. In appraising books, the commiAees keep in mind points such as the following: Authe.4.1city of information, literary quality, attractiveness to children, and the reading levels of children in each grade. Titles cited for purchase in sets are retained on the list from year to year until such time as a committee elects to drop them. Single titles of which two or fewer copies are ordered, system wide, in two succeeding years are dropped at the end of the two years. A committee, however, may reinstate a title in the succeeding year. Committees annually revise their individual lists in whole or in part. Effort is made to standardize the format. coding, instructions, etc. of the various subject lists, but the organization of the titles within each list confirms to the wishes of the committee. The committee arranges the books in the list in whatever way it believes will best satisfy instructional needs and be most serviceable to teachers who use the lists as requisition sheets at the time of the annual supple- mentary books order. In the areas which cross over elementary and secondary levels, the books have been coded and are included in the catalog. Supplementary books for use in secondary schools are reviewed under the direction of the supervisors in the various subject areas. While details in the techniques used in evaluation may vary somewhat, the general procedures vsed by each area are similar. Preliminary screening of supplementary books is the responsibility of the supervisors. The opinions of teachers concerning specific books are sought whenever the nature of the book suggests need for specialized or specific review. When approved, the books are added to the Supplementary Books Lists for that particular subject. At least once a year copies of the list of newly added titles are sent by the supervisors to the teachers concerned and to the librarian in each secondari school. All lists except those for courses in the social studies include recommendations for books for purchase in single copies or sets; lists fcr social studies recommend only books considered appropriate and useful in sets. Supervisors may also call specific titles to the attention of the teachers in a given school. The teachers and librarian then assume the responsibility of preparing the list of books to be purchased for their particular school. SUPPLEMENTARY BOOKS COMMITTEE 1973-1974 Paul J.
